BAR Honda's front differential

Post

Does anyone else remember when BAR showed up at a race in 2005ish with the front differential that the stewards made them remove before racing? I can't seem to find any info about it. Does anyone have any links?

Thanks,

Chris

Check this  http://www.formula1.com/news/technical/2004/725/53.html

It was first introduced in 1999 by Benetton and was originally named as
Front Torque Transfer FTT

BAR006 in 2004 made a mechanical copy of that system and named it Front Clutch Package FCP

That is not a proper technical analisys, is not technical and is not an analisys. It only says its a device to help stability while braking.

Appart from that there is a picture that shows it location on the rear and another picture of the front, so where the hell is the device located and how does it work?

Race car engineering magazine had a interview with Geoff Willis on the FCP. I don’t have the copy to hand, but basically the set up whether in its original electronic aided form or its later mechanical set up was used to improve corner entry stability, both by preventing front wheel locking, but also to induce a turning moment across the front axle. Quite how this was ever allowed to race is questionable, but the device was allowed to run, then prevented in its electronic form. In its final mechanical format, the team would have been allowed to race it the next year, but a deal with other teams on limiting front wing flex was agreed and the unit was never aced again.

Sounds a bit like the McLaren brake system, which was used 1997 and 1998.

Hmmm,

With the new KERS systems on the horizon, does this device now have a way back into F1?

Thanks for the info!
