F1 hub coating

Post

Hey guys - does anyone know what sort of coating the F1 teams put on their hubs? They have a shiny brownish-purply coating. I think it's some sort of black-oxide but I don't know.

Any pointers appreciated, thanks!

I'm keen to know too! I thik it's the same stuff the use on the drive shafts.

You're right. I've held both of them and it appears to be the same coating.

Anodic treatment in sulfuric acid results in a pronounced deep blue to purple oxide coating on titanium. (per finishing.com)

I could be wrong, but I would doubt the drive shafts are titanium.

F1 half shafts and stub axles would be titanium. The coating is likely anodic.

While titanium has excellent natural corrosion resistance, it also tends to gall/fret under contact. So wherever it has a loaded surface contact, like a spline or a thread, it must be hard coated to reduce galling.

I'd still bet the hubs and axles are 300M or 4340 and black oxide coated

Tom's right, the hubs and axles are indeed 300M. At least that's what the hub machine shop told me. Those things are freaking LIGHT too. The F1 axles are phenomenally lightweight; 2 of the F1 axles is heavier than one of our FSAE axles.

I'll look around Portland and see what the coating vendors can tell me. The only black oxide I've dealt with is a really nasty looking coating. The F1 hubs and drive shafts had nearly mirror finishes.

Have both front and rear axles from the 2006-2008 time period and they are both titanium. No reason that the axles would not also be titanium.

What alloy of Ti? I don't think Ti is hard enough to be used on the wheel bearing races and CV races, which can be machined straight on a 300M steel hub.

Semantics? I believe uprights would have been Ti in 2007, spindles (as per OP's illustration) will be steel. It is hard to believe that drive shafts would be made from anything other than steel.

my take on it: PVD

TiALCN /or ALTICN titanium Nitrite coating in old rose colour..(presumably the latter one)
or HE Z (TiCN + TiAlN) your take. it´s tough to extremes.

PVD is a striking process physical vapour deposit you can also put decorative finishes to plastic and make em look like Unobtainium...

Looking at the spec sheet, the EXXTRAL Rose looks like the coating used.

800C temp range, high hardness, low friction, high oxidation resistance.

Excellent for stainless steel and nickel based alloys.

300M and EXTRAAL Rose coating is the best guess... +1 for you mate... =D>
