It's nothing to do with the V6 and Hybrid systems, if they had to make those smaller they would. The cars are so long because of safety systems and aero, mainly aero.

2008 sized cars with hybrid PU and ground effect aero would be something to see!!

Why?

I love it. The added technical element it adds to the sport. I just wish they'd open up the rules to allow them to try different battery tech, such as solid state etc.

aren't the 2026 rules 'opened-up' enough ?

It is what it is.
Since Formula 1 was always intended to be cutting-edge technology, albeit with racing-specific adaptations, it only makes sense that there is an electrical component at play.
Alternatively, there is NASCAR or something like that.

Nevertheless, cars urgently need to be shorter and lighter.
Gladly more than the regulations provide for 2026.

Personally im not a fan of the 2026 regulations, the engines will be so weak that they need active aero to reduce drag enough so that they can barely manage a lap of almost full power.
Only good thing is that they finally start to regulate the length of the cars.

Another problem i have with the 2026 regulations is that we've only just got the ground effect cars for 2 seasons, and the teams only get to grips with these regulations before the introduction of new aero regulations.
FIA need to understand that stable regulations is what will gives better racing over time

Give me a lawnmower that has over 1000bhp and one of the most frugal power units on the planet any day!!

It's ironic though, because I play guitar as a hobby and hate modern digital equipment. So I can definitely see where you're coming from!!

But they are racing like-for-like, not seeing who can go the fastest. The saying is that it is more fun to go fast in a slow car than it it is to be restricted in a fast car, and I agree in most cases. Speed is only relevant, not absolute or they could take out the corners
When arguing with a fool, be sure the other person is not doing the same thing.

I don’t understand why the 2022 regs didn’t mandate a shorter wheelbase.

They did. The first time a maximum wheelbase rule was introduced.

It is ironic that people complain about the wheelbases when that is the only dimension that was still free until 2021 (maximum width rule since 1973, maximum height rule since 1977).

Teams were merely chasing maximum performance as they are entitled to do, since that is the whole objective.
