Williams FW46

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Those 4 holles that he is talking about are there only to fix those big aero rakes that are measuring airflow behind the front wheels to the chassis, and previous Williams cars had them as well.

Exactly right.
I'm not sure there is any scope in terms of legality boxes to add bodywork in that area. It's outside the sidepod volume, which I think Mercedes used for their little downwashing vanes.

Williams provided some nice close-up shots of their car in their video on flow-vis.

Image
They've added an optional air outlet in front of the rear suspension.

Flow-vis highlights a little outlet towards the end of the outer sidepod edge, presumably used for electronics cooling.

Nice catch, but I think it is not outlet for cooling, but an opening for rear tire temperature sensor. Previous Williams cars used a bubble on the floor for this (image below is FW45) and I don't see one on FW46.

I like his speculation on the possible clever "bad tolerance radiator" for relatively cleaner air pass through on the sidepod.

Wouldn't a better version of that just be reducing the size of the inlet? Why increase airflow via questionable interpretation of rules rather than just by standard means?

Interesting scoop to introduce more air into the diffuser, not noticed anyone else doing this.

The changes vs the FW45:

Quite a bit more vague and generalized than their show and tell documents last year (e.g. here).

That’s a really strange floor.

The central area cuts back in a third of the way down. And there seems to be some flow tripper just a bit further back.

Haven’t seen anything like it.

Seems like it’s a bit ducted for this floor shot. Seems like a lot of hardware for a temp sensor.
