Mercedes W15

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Look at the top element. It is connected to the nose only via legality wire

Can see this getting banned or ubiquitously copied
Rules were made to avoid generation of strong vortical structures in that area, so it would have to be banned via TD asap or other teams might follow up quickly and the whole thing could get out of hand. Recent events have shown FOM and FIA don't appreciate such solutions which hamper overtaking capabilities of following cars.
Tombazidis is probably writing the TD as we speak :D

I don't understand why they'd publicly reveal this novelty so early, when it clearly "violates the intent" of the new regulations (which FIA/FOM have taken seriously lately it seems). Possible red herring?

Perhaps it's an idea they have, they have an implementation, but before putting in a lot of effort they'd prefer to have it banned if it's not happening?

Not him anymore. It's Jan Monchaux - ex Sauber TD.

By showing the front wing like that - they have either had confirmation it's okay or want it to be banned on purpose.

Maybe they have already found out it was illegal or not beneficial but decided to include it in the launch car. We've seen Alfa launch with funky looking floor edges only to turn up with conventional looking ones

I wonder why show it now, unless it is to get it banned from other teams.

Mercedes have history with clearing new ideas with the FIA before implementation.

I can't see why they wouldn't have done the same here and it given the green light.

Very uncanny photo, feels like all the people have been edited in. Either the lighting there is wack or the people were cut/pasted from other pictures.
From Wolff to the right there's no glare on the faces whatsoever. I doubt it's real photo. More like composition and CGI.

Interesting, Mortorsport italy is reporting that Merc have found more than half a second of performance (doesnt say how much over 0.5secs they have found)

https://it.motorsport.com/f1/news/f1-te ... /10575697/
Don't AM say they have found 0.6 lol
no clue about AM, but Motorsport is saying its from "Merc's simulation data" so should take that with a grain of salt
