McLaren MCL38

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Are these bumps in the insides of the foam protections new? I've marked one with a red arrow, there is an equivalent one in the other side, harder to see. The helmet comes to rest on those knobs when turning, rather than directly on the foam protections as is normal.
I posted something similar, but larger, from the Yuki's car, also from today at Suzuka.

Same question: driver comfort, or avoidance of flow blockage? Of course it could be both.

No present in most cars BTW, not today in any case.
It could be to prevent the helmet going to a position where the view for the driver is sub optimal and for keeping his Helmet in that range without straining his neck muscles too much.

Edit: Just noticed Lionsheart said as much already.
Give a man a fire, and he will be warm for a night.
Set a man on fire, and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

Looks like the back of the wing at the front top of the sidepods has been reprofiled with it producing a bit more downwash

Zoomed in at the wrong part. It's the little wing off the edge of the sidepods below the mirror support.

There have been no Car Presentation submissions about that area of the car since the start of the year, do you have a visual comparison?

Ok I think you’re correct I looked back at older pictures and the lines where the part was modified was definitely visible from at least one or two races ago. So it appears the modification was probably made after testing at the beginning of the season.

Mea culpa

Looks like the same sidepods also. At least the inlets.
