McLaren MCL38

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Seems like mercedes has retained the overbite as well. So we got RB, Merc and McLaren going this route.

When will McLaren hit the track? Some live pictures on natural lighting would be great for comparison.

Also, we dont have much on the rear suspension yet.
RB going overbite is a false flag. It’s still an underbite
Also where is the overbite on the Mercedes?
That was my mistake. From side-view it seemed like they had retained it, but Mercedes no longer has it. And on the RedBull is not 100% confirmed. It looks like an overbite from the pictures, but the pictures are blurry.

Also suspension rod connection looks goofy to me.
Tried to trace them and the vectors dont meet at the middle of the chassis, but let's consider this human error.

Either way, it looks like they connect mid-air and not at the bottom of the nose.

The pull rod your looking at is in the same place as last year.

You can see the left lower pushrod in the darkened area, just. When digitally hiding the tunnel entrances this has also be digitally darkened and so is very hard to see.

The car is been out on track for the good part of the last hour and there is not a single picture yet. Seriously, there are no journalists on track right now with Mercedes expected to come out for a shakedown later as well?

Guess I was right about the launch car basically an mcl60 with steeper anti dive.

As it looks right now, you could pass this for a race week upgrade package of MCL60. Externally speaking, it's the least developed/changed package of all cars released so far.

With how confident they have presented themselves lately I get the feeling like this can't be it. Genuine the crowd goes mild moment.

Maybe these are just stripped renders and they hit the track with something that looks different. But at the moment it appears to be an evolution albeit with a relatively big inlet change going to an overbite.

I think:
Ferrari, Merc, Macca, RBR and AMR will look significantly different come the first day of testing. It is really frustrating because its is so interesting to see these cars but you are never rewarded for your efforts to learn anything because it turns into nothing.

I think McLaren did a great job doing their livery reveal, because that is pretty much what all these are considered as being.

Given how awkward the Mercedes camp looks all stood there with Hamilton... I bet they wished they just did a car livery only reveal with no drivers haha

Thought the rear suspension looked a bit different..

I feel they may have merged two of the lower wishbones together.. not sure need more angles.

Very curious. Maybe they decided to make more room for the diffuser.

That position 5 in your first picture looks like something has been digitally altered there.

We will see with better pictures, but it looks by and large the same to me, if you ignore that odd rendering.

Edit: Something is odd, picture 2, the leading elements of the suspension when connecting to the chassis should be horizontally at similar positions (As per the third picture), but are not in picture 2.

I am honestly so confused by the whole "launch" event from McLaren this year. First they drop a video which barely shows the car at all. Then they drop some edited photo/renders of a car that is 90% MCL60. Then the car runs on track for >1 hour and all that comes out of it is a grandstand video in which you can only hear the car.

This is bizarre and not in line with what they have done in recent years. I feel like the first time we will see live images of this car is when testing starts last week. Pointless to comment much on what we already have until then.

What I could tell so far:
1 - Unusual sidepod inlets, square-ish shape to them with a small overbite created by the new "mid wing" under the mirror;
2 - Front suspension seems to have a more pronounced wishbone angle, similar to the concept Red Bull pioneered in 2022;
3 - More refined engine cover and sidepods shape, with the undercut now having that "wave" similar to 2023 Red Bull;
4 - Not much to say about front wing, the picture from the front is from an old wing, the picture from the top may be from the new wing, but doesn't give any details;
5 - Rear wing seems more refined, with the cut under the top element being very pronounced;
6 - The pictures give an "unrefined" feeling, meaning I expect a different car in many aspects come winter testing and Round 1.
