I have to say, the high front wings really do spoil the aesthetic of the cars

If one believes that form should follow function (an engineering direction rather than a design one), then the high noses are nice because they have a function. Unlike the swept front wings which are solely a "make it look fast" sop to FOM's marketing department.

Nice thing is, it's only Day 1 and cars are around 3 secs slower than last year's pole! I presume by May's Spanish GP they'll already be close if not faster than 2021!

Strange thing is how these cars make up this laptime compared to 2021. It seems that they are quite a bit slower in the narrow-slow parts of the track because of the increased weight but they manage to gain back time through fast corners and straights!

What do you think?? Will they manage to beat 2021 lap times by the end of the test??

Personally I wouldn't take the sector 3 times very seriously yet. It's cold, and the teams are probably still working on what their optimal suspension set-ups will be.
Haven't they also changed the layout of the track?

I think these 3 days will be to look for the maximum possible data going around a lot, I don't think any representative time will be seen until Q1

They changed it last year.

Just to add a bit of context if there are for some reason people reading into the times
Speed difference with, and without DRS.

So your suggesting RedBull didn't use DRS today? I'm sure I saw the car with it open?

Alonso had no DRS and had similar speed. This was the straight after turn 9.

Seems to be a worrying lack of laps completed for Alfa to me

Any on track observation of cars following closely other cars?? Have they gotten any better in that regard??

After all these rules were designed just for that...

So McLaren was already pushing the car to its limits and even so they didn't top the charts!

Check the times again. McLaren we’re fastest by half a second. I think the drivers are always pushing, lap time is dependent on lots of other factors. Engine map, fuel load to name just 2. Also remember mcLaren normally run quite conservative in practice sessions during a GP weekend.
