At Monaco, single lap pace is the most important thing; drivers can drive seconds off the true race pace and still maintain position.

That year that Ricciardo’s complete ERS system just gave up, minus 180 hp or so and still comfortably in the lead.

And the following year when Hamilton had shot rear tyres and held back Max who was much quicker on his better tyres.

And Senna holding back Mansell even though Mansell was on brand new tyres and several seconds a lap faster.

This despite Pirelli claiming the new compounds are over a second faster than older ones, outside of car development.

and? It’s a crap car, even with the upgrade. Media driven hype job this upgrade when everyone knew it wouldn’t deliver much, bar a few tenths. Doubt RB or a rival care about the Merc floor.

There's always something to learn from rival cars. Adrian Newey was spotted studying the Merc at an earlier GP. The minute you get cocky and think you cannot learn from another car is when it starts going downhill.
