Are teams setting the car up for fast lap pace here rather than for pure race pace?
At Monaco, single lap pace is the most important thing; drivers can drive seconds off the true race pace and still maintain position.
That year that Ricciardo’s complete ERS system just gave up, minus 180 hp or so and still comfortably in the lead.

And the following year when Hamilton had shot rear tyres and held back Max who was much quicker on his better tyres.

And Senna holding back Mansell even though Mansell was on brand new tyres and several seconds a lap faster.

There's a good history of it happening here.

Yeah, the FPs are thrilling, the qualy is the most tense of the year, race when the pitstops are over is usually over too.

Which is why you hope for a change in the weather mid race

Speaking of which, there seems to be a good chance of rain tomorrow

cars are somehow slower in 2023? I guess new tarmac effect from last year has been neutered.

This despite Pirelli claiming the new compounds are over a second faster than older ones, outside of car development.

Now the floor was revealed for the whole 🌎
and? It’s a crap car, even with the upgrade. Media driven hype job this upgrade when everyone knew it wouldn’t deliver much, bar a few tenths. Doubt RB or a rival care about the Merc floor.

A pretty nothing crash.

There's always something to learn from rival cars. Adrian Newey was spotted studying the Merc at an earlier GP. The minute you get cocky and think you cannot learn from another car is when it starts going downhill.
