This thread is superb.
Cheers Hollus for putting it in

We should enjoy the skills of the driver excluded, but it's been a long while since there was jeopardy.

Post

19-car 2023 Italian grand prix.

Monza result:

1 - PER - 25
2 - SAI - 18
3 - LEC - 15
4 - RUS - 12
5 - HAM - 10
6 - ALB - 8
7 - NOR - 6
8 - ALO - 4
9 - BOT - 2
10 - LAW - 1

Championship points:

PER - 269
ALO - 221
HAM - 210
SAI - 145
LEC - 142
RUS - 137
NOR - 111
STR - 66
OCO - 52
GAS - 52
PIA - 49
ALB - 27
HUL - 12
BOT - 12
TSU - 9
ZHO - 8
MAG - 4
SAR - 1
LAW - 1

Race (new) narratives:

Q: Ferrari front row in Monza! Perez has finally gotten it, right? Second row... more than good enough.
It took Perez 45 laps to slowly chase everyone down, but the win is his. He even got praise for being very cerebral and winning by playing the long game, letting his rival's tires come to him.
The race featured the two Ferraris battling it out for the lead after he first pit stop, then red cars telling the songle blue car that, if he wanted to pass, he was welcome to do in the green, a three-way DRS battle for the lead and finally that lap 45 pass. From there on, two red cars danced with each other almost in every corner. Peak F1!
One point for Lawson, what a Cinderella story for the substitute of the substitute...
In the WDC, Perez is now more than 2 races in front, and he is routinely qualifying well enough to collect big points in the races. What could go wrong?

19-car 2023 Singapore grand prix.

Singapore result:

1 - SAI - 25
2 - NOR - 18
3 - HAM - 15
4 - LEC - 12
5 - GAS - 10
6 - PIA - 8

8 - LAW - 4
9 - MAG - 2
10 - ALB - 1

Championship points:

SAI - 170
LEC - 154
RUS - 137
NOR - 129
STR - 66

OCO - 52
ALB - 28
HUL - 12
BOT - 12
TSU - 9
ZHO - 8
MAG - 6
LAW - 5
SAR - 1

Race (new) narratives:

Beautiful Pole, and victory leading every lap for Sainz. Only a witty trick in the last laps kept him there, though, Some people claim that it would never have happened with Max in the field.
Perez, qualifying, you know, you know. And yet, Alonso blurbs even harder, topping a weak pace with a rookie mistake on the pit lane entry.
So Hamilton passes Alonso in the championship and looks like the most likely challenger for Perez, but still 49 points away...
Rivals, not enemies.

Race (new) narratives:

Double first row start for McLaren (again after Silverstone!).
And they also finish 1-2! (Although in inverted order).
Perez flops again. His method of qualifying OK-ish and then passing in the race... it doesn't work if you go 4-wide into a corner, need a new front wing, collect a penalty under SC conditions, then crash with a Haas, damage the front wing again, then collect another penalty under SC conditions. Calm down, Perez! DNF all in all. But with Hamilton meh and Alonso ufff, it is like the turtle and the snail chasing the lamp-post in the WDC.
By the way, the outroar of the WDC leader serving a 5 second penalty with a broken car, to avoid carrying said penalty to the next race (Perez had a sheepish face while sitting in the pits waiting to pull such a trick)... the FIA are up to get Red Bull with so many penalties and the FIA are up to favor Red Bull by allowing such shenanigans.
Russel put up a hard to understand resistance to swapping positions with Hamilton, which he eventually did. How much higher would Hamilton be in the WDC if Russel had played the dutiful number two all season?
Lawson is now in a very respectable 6 points.
Rivals, not enemies.

This is awesome @Hollus, a season for the ages, it looks as though the only thing that can prevent an 8th for LH is……

…..the McLaren revival! Perez seems to be determined to blunder his way out of contention!

This race at the top is likely to go to the wire. Norris seems to be getting better with every passing race and we are likely to see him finish the season in the top 3.

Ahhh, Thanks. I should have finished this thread earlier. Might still do it just for completeness, but next year in any case.

This is such a succes, I want more. Please do a 19 car season from 2014 onwards. Let’s do away with….. …..Bottas?!

Or, better yet, do a 19 car season and every race a different car does not participate. Because we are not talking about just one specific…… …..car, right?
