Jeez.
Renault sells off a 75% stake - so what? Renault is just another owner. They supply free engines, and pay a handsome sponsorship fee,
which they will still do; but that's it - the team is entirely independent, including the engine works. And Carlos Ghosn and the Renault board are no more "racing specialists" than anyone at Genii. And who's to say that Lopez won't be every bit as active an owner as someone like Mateschitz? Everyone remember when Mateschitz "took over" Sauber? No? Oh, well, I guess it wasn't that big of a deal.
And who cares about the percentages? Mercedes never owned more than a 40% share of McLaren, and they only own 45% of Brawn. Ron Dennis only owns 15% of his own team, but has it ever been anything but his? I don't think BMW
ever owned any percentage of Williams, and yet they were considered a "manufacturer team" at the time.
The only thing this does is make it easier for Renault to move to another team or leave F1 in the future should they want to. Which, of course, is the way the manufacturers
should operate in F1. 100% ownership never made any sense - it was all just ego. In fact,
any percentage over what gets your name on the side of the car makes no sense, unless there is investment potential.
