Sportscars are I believe more competitive as well. Look at the GT1 class - Corvette, Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Saleen, and Ferrari, among others. Back in the late 90's Panoz used to run front-engined, rear-wheel drive prototypes. There's a lot more variety than F1 in terms of engineering. Although sportscars aren't as quick as F1 cars, they still bring more competitive racing. GT1 was a lot closer than I wanted last year (fan of Corvette Racing).

One comparison that can be made is between the F5000 Lola 332/333 and it's sibling, the Can-Am 333. It was basically the simila Lola chassis, but the bodywork was different. In the F5000, it was classic open wheeler, while the Can Am car had the wheels covered. They both ran a 5 liter Chevrolet OHV V-8. In 1976 Alan Jones won the F5000 Mosport race at an average speed of 112.530 in a Lola 332-Chevrolet. In 1977 Patrick Tambay won the Can Am Molson in a Lola T333CS-Chevrolet at an average speed of 111.819 MPH.
Similar chassis, similar engines, just different bodywork.
