Red Bull RB7 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

By the way the cooling opening at the back of the RB7 is ugly as hell. :?

Interesting, from Ted at the BBC

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsp ... 402470.stm

Red Bull and Ferrari have topped the timesheets so far, and from watching the cars on track, look the class of the field. The Red Bull RB7 is using its moveable rear wing in places no other car can, for example in the middle of the fast corner heading onto the main straight.

Sebastian Vettel confirmed that the car is a clear step forward from the RB6 that carried him to last year's world championship.

Wow. I'm quite surprised any 2011 car can be a step forward from the 2010 challenger, considering the double diffuser ban. Unless that team really didn't use much of the double diffuser last year anyways. Red Bulls' double diffuser wasn't very big IIRC

Interested to know what he means by step forward given the quotes in this article:

so the exhaust exits right by the rear crash structure... how does blowing the hot gas on only one small spot help the diffuser?

Look at the pics... the exhausts are still blowing the diffuser on it's outer edges. The 'exhausts' that you are are seeing are what Blackout and I have been talking about... Most definitely they are exhausting SOMETHING out of those holes, but it is probably not the engine exhausts. More than likely they are just additional cooling outlets, transmission cooler or auxiliary radiator outlets.

It's all about creating pressure differences in combination with everything they have back there with hotter and cooler air. It's impossible to know exactly what they are trying to do specifically.

I don't think so. These are the same small openings which has been spotted there during the first test sessions at Valencia. If you focus you can see exhaust routed around the wheels. You can barely see outlet on the left side hidden under winglets and wishbones. On the right it's covered by RW endplate.

On the second photo you can clearly see the exhaust blowing under the floor just before wheels and two small ducts around crash structures. As to those two, I guess it might be gearbox cooling.

P.S. Wow! Took me quite some time to reed all that post written in car threads during last two weeks...

If I had to put money down, I agree.

Would be cool if it were something more 'exotic' but I think that it's just some smartly routed ducts relating to the gearbox cooling (I will assume they have at least an oil cooler(s) for the transmission).

I don't know what you mean?
