Agreed, though Pirelli does seem very optimistic on the longevity of the hard compound. They claim to have data from some teams saying very long runs are possible. Though I am with you and feel that a 3 stopper is ideal, or else you'll be really running the tyres down to the wheels.
"Degradation is one tenth – I have seen a 20 laps analysis from one team and it was less than one tenth."
And the softs are 0.3 gain a lap right?
The softs are 2 seconds faster than these new hards on the first lap..so the cross over point is:
Time added to original lap Time of the driver on the hards
0.1second per lap * X laps = -2 seconds+0.3 seconds per lap *xlaps
x laps = (2seconds/0.2 seconds per lap)
Cross over point for lap times to equalise = 10 laps.
So after 10 laps the driver hards will be gaining at 0.2 seconds a lap to the driver on the softs but the driver on the softs will already be 11 seconds ahead. The guy on the hards would only be able to pass the driver on the softs after 20 laps have passed.
This is assuming the dropoff is always linear and the guy on the soft is not over the cliff and does not pit. So the guy on the hards can come closer and can pass... he just needs to maximise the hard tyres for at least 20laps...of course the guy on softs pits and put on anoter set of softs things will be very different..
