Williams FW34 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Well the team lost out on a few hours of running today. Sure we'll hear some kind of explanation later.

This is what I found on GPupdate website (not a high resolution image though):

Using flow vis there in the last picture.

I love the little bullet shaped DRS activator. Looks like it should be fully parallel to the airstream when the flap is open.

Also today's test summary is up.
http://www.williamsf1.com/news/view/2049
Driver: Pastor Maldonado
Chassis / engine: FW34-01 / RS27-5326/1
Location: Jerez de la Frontera 4.428km
Objectives: Set-up work and long runs
Weather: Dry and sunny
Time: 1:21.197 (10th) On lap 40 of 97

Mark Gillan, Chief Operations Engineer: We successfully completed the majority of our planned test programme today with Pastor covering 97 laps. We performed a mixture of mechanical and aerodynamic set-up tests, in addition to continued engine and KERS systems checks. Bruno will have his first outing in the car tomorrow as we switch driver for the final two days of the test.

Pastor Maldonado: We ran through our test programme and covered everything we needed to today. We did some long runs this afternoon and the car is looking good. We will now spend some time analysing all of the data we have gathered. It’s good to put more mileage on the FW34 and we now aim to continue that throughout the next two days.

The Williams F1 Team will be back on track tomorrow, Thursday 9 February, with Bruno Senna driving the FW34 for the third day of the test.

Those pics are too big for embedding, that is why I only linked them. They are more than 3MB together. Not everyone has desire to download extremely high res photos while opening forum topic, especially if it is during next visit to forum, after cache was cleared.

they have to open up the sidepods cooloing holes down low and not at the top just so they can get clean airflow all across the beam wing. So we will never see this car with a cooling hole lkike redbull.

Intriguing how the whole of the back is optimized for getting clean air to that beam wing, yet the upper A-arm is right in front of it. Clearly they're trying to construct a 2-element wing, but I can't help thinking that under brake dive the suspension arm will be lower relative to the wing, and the effect would be broken.

Maybe someone with CFD skills might want to investigate the effect of the variable slot gap?

No I think it's too high to be either a benefit or a real problem. The shape of the engine cover ahead of the beam wing doesn't look very good to me, not streamlined enough.

Yeh, it does look very odd for the back of a car, but we would have to assume that they've done the numbers on it and that it works well enough.

Most of the aero developement is done for yaw conditions, so they may have found an advantage bynot having an edge at the back, even if it's a bit unusual and as far as I know you would often prefer having a edge at the back, that defines a fixed separation line for the flow

Well it's definitely more shapely than what they had last year!

I don't profess to understand the aerodynamic complexities at work in that area. I'm sure the team know what they are trying to achieve through all their CFD and windtunnel work. Let's hope it works!

http://live.autosport - 11:06 Williams informs us that it is not planning to do qualifying runs at Jerez. Lots of teams focused on more important work at the moment

They are hiding the game?

The car seems to be showing good reliability so far. 125 laps completed yesterday and 96 as it stands before lunch today. Obviously can't read too much into it at this stage.
