From a few pages back, in response to my initial question about the patch taped to the left rear beam wing:

They ran it pretty much non stop during testing and a wire exits it up the rear wing endplate to the wing. That's all I know.

With the bulge, and a wire, one would have to assume a sensor. But again for what purpose and will it run in Melbourne?

I have some knowledge of maraging steel. It has very few uses.

Another possible candidate material would be 17-4PH. I've got some beautiful heat treated parts at work that have almost exactly that colour - I'd have thought that again, it's a material that would be reasonably suitable for driveshaft purposes.

Relatively easy to machine in the annealed condition, and then up to 1300MPa in the heat treated condition.

I don't if that's the material in question, but it would not surprise me if it was.

The drive shaft probably has a surface treatment that promotes long fatigue life.
It could be a heat treatment or some nitrite coating.

This is not a color from heat treatment or nitrating. This is a PVD coating which of coarse does include forms on nitrites.

TiCN sounds about right color-wise, TiN is more recognizable with its goldish color, but why do you want this anti-wear ceramic on a driveshaft?

I'd expect the ends to be coated with that perhaps, seems a bit strange to do the entire shaft though.

Why would you need low friction on a driveshaft? Surely the rolling contacts of the bearings are not on the shaft itself...
