I still take some comfort & hope in the fact that the W03 has proven to be reliable (bar Schu's flukey gearbox -- a one-off, I hope) and fast straight out of the box. With those two tick boxes already checked, they can now analyse the additional race data they've gathered from Melbourne and focus on finding solutions for their tyre degradation woes. With less worries about keeping the car from falling apart and extracting more raw pace, the team can now devote more time during Malaysian free practice towards finding the setup that should keep the W03 in its optimum tyre operating window for the race.

With better brains, resources & systems back in Brackley this year, Ross seems confident of being able to iron out emerging technical problems and developing the car in pace with the frontrunners.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't a flukey gearbox so much as his agricultural driving that upset the boxes control unit.

I was also under the impression that motocross is not good for an F1 gearbox. U.S tv didn't mention any previous gearbox niggles leading up to Mike jumping the triple(motocross speak).

According to Schumacher, he had gearbox trouble on the way up to the corner, and went off-roading to avoid spinning the car.

Thunderstorms expected for the Malaysian GP! That's bad new for the team as they need as much dry running as possible to sort out their tire degradation issues. Plus if it turns out to be a wet race then the use of DRS is banned, nullifying any advantage they gain from their F-Duct wing.

In free practice 3 Michael lost the rear while he wasnt doing a fast lap.
Anybody seen that?

Really strange to drive so slow and suddenly lose the rear of the car.

I think his DRS was open or he closed it...bit too late...at the moment he tried to enter the corner...

They are ferocious weather systems in that climate I understand. But they dont go on and on like here in Europe.
The info I have is that it's scattered showers, with high temps and humidity(normal) for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Hopefully Friday running will be dry for Mercedes to test a tyre friendly set up. But I would like to see wet qualifying and race, we didnt get anough last year! :D

During the MotoGP test a few weeks ago, it rained for hours at a stretch resulting in two out of three days being washed off. Even so a wet race would be exciting; as long as Mercedes benefit from it ;)

Mercedes team boss Ross Brawn hits out at rival teams' exhaust designs.

"We are now looking at the systems people are using to see if we feel that they could be a benefit to us. I suspect they will disappear next year."

Michael Schumacher - DNF: "It was an unfortunate end to my race when I lost drive going into turn one. I was trying different gears and occasionally the drive came back, but in the end, I had to go onto the grass to avoid the risk of the car being forced into a spin. It was especially unfortunate as we have not had this problem during the winter tests and were very reliable. This is why I am not concerned, as I know things like this happen in racing,

button has always had difficulty switching on the tyres because of his ultra smooth style ; he clearly didn't have any problem yesterday despite the temperature , ran away from the start
one of pirellli's stated aims for this year was easier switch on because ,they say , only the RB's and hamilton could do that last year ; clearly they have succeeded ....so what's up with the mercedes ?
to the optimist a glass is half full ; to the pessimist a glass is half empty ; to the F1 engineer the glass is twice as big as it needs to be

Malaysia has the same forecast every year because it's just very difficult to tell this time of year.

Open DRS or even no rear wing wouldnt cause that on such a low speed.

It just doesnt make sense he spins out like that.
