Alonso would likely be in the top 10 if he'd gone out on the wets like Perez etc. did. He didn't and lost out. Now Charlie has said they'll wait until there is no standing water. This will allow the guys who messed up in the first part of Q2 to have a second chance.

Anyone who is currently in the top 10 and gets knocked out by Alonso getting to run on a drier track would be quite right to feel very aggrieved.

Putting the cars into a wet set up wouldn't make much difference - the ride height isn't changed that much on the cars for wet weather as the tyres actually give a significant change in ride height by being about 10mm larger in diameter (so about 5mm increase in ride height). The issue is really just that the plank gets in contact with the water and starts to surf which then lifts the car and thus the tyres.

I have been wondering whether the the plank could actually be grooved so that it could cut through the water (have grooves running from end to end). After all, the plank is only there to prevent the cars running too close to the ground. It could just be done with 2 longitudinal strips rather than a full plank. Don't know whether that would help or not.

Fantastic atmosphere at Silverstone. Much respect to the people sitting there in the rain and having fun. Mexincan waves with the audience & pit crews - unbelivable.

You are obviously forgetting that EVERYONE will be able to drive after Q2 is continued

Not forgetting that at all but the reality is that Alonso is probably going to be quicker than e.g. Ricciardo once the track is deemed to be "safe". That means that Alonso, who gambled on inters at the start of Q2 (presumably to try to save a set of wets for the race), gets a second chance and it will be at the expense of a team who made a better call at the start of Q2.

That's the reality of it. Perhaps Q1 should be re-run once the track dries so that everyone can run in the best conditions again? After all, Button is out because he made the wrong tyre choice by not swapping to fresh inters earlier.

You are talking as if other drivers tires weren't degrading as well. Button would have probably improved with new tires and when used the circuit is at its best. But so would anybody else....

Can you tell me which drivers surpassed Button at the end and put him into the relegation zone???
Sure the tyres were degrading for all the drivers, but it would have been greater for some drivers compared to others. At the beginning of the session McLaren were running 1 - 2 for a couple of laps so the pace is there. Button seemed to then slip off the pace more than Hamilton, but even Hamilton was struggling in P14 despite setting much of the early pace.

Perez, Ricciardo etc. out, both Ferraris in. Shame and just as I predicted.

A nicely manufactured Q3 from FIA! Feel sorry for Sauber and Torro Rosso.

So Hamilton was in a league of his own in Q2, despite only managing 14th in Q1. Shows how much the tyre wear, or drying conditions, was hindering the McLarens in Q1.

But looking at Q2 then both Alonso and Vettel were lucky to make it through. Should be interesting in Q3! If it dries then I reckon it'll come back toward them, but if the standing water remains or it starts raining again then I'd bet on Hamilton.

I think they were using wet tires in Q2 but inters at Q1.....

Great lap by Schumi... If only he had one more lap on interns :)

Schumachers effort in the wets - 1 second quicker than hamilton.
Schumi on inters - had 1 lap - 1 lap to get the time in. 1 outlap, 1 hotlap. And he goes 3rd.

Everyone else had 4-5laps worth of experience on the inters. schumi does it in 1.

for me, he has proven this year that hes still got the raw skill.

Clearly McLaren just don't have the pace on the inters. Looks like they can't get the temperature in them. Full wets and he was in a different league, a second faster than the rest of the field. But on the inters they're not far off two seconds off the pace.

Will be hoping for a full wet race tomorrow, although probably need a dry or light shower for the start otherwise they'll just not start the race.
