Halfway into 2013 however, it remains to be seen if Sauber is going to invest much more time into this layout, especially because developments in this area will not be possible next year - as the 2014 rules stipulate a single exhaust exit close to the centre of the car. I wish there was a clearer picture of the burning on the rear bodywork to help get an idea of where the exhaust is going.

If at least the burns are where they should be, extending down to the edge of the diffuser, it could be a very positive thing for the team.

Thanks. It appears that the slim sidepods are giving them problems. No effective downwash over the sidepods and the humps aren't enough to counteract the large flow around.

The simplest step, I imagine, is to have evolve the panel to have larger humps a la Red Bull to at least catch the air flow around the sidepods to direct it down the ramp.

Ohhh ohhh.
That doesn't look like it will work well.
Way too much heat traces visible on the inside. The flow around the sidepods still seems to blow it inward.
As mentioned, RB style humps may help a bit. Maybe the tunnel is also too obstructed.
Anyway the narrow sidepods will not really favour a stable established flow over the sidepods that will stand a fighting chance against the inward flow from the sides.
Here's waiting for Version 2b but a solution based on these narrow sidepods might be tricky.

Just add some other material like red bull and merc did and no mor burns. Remeber even Merc had burns this year with their new car but that was before they added non painted parts.

Interesting that their sidepod tunnel design is closer to the B-spec B8 than the D-spec RB8. Most teams failed miserably with that - though perhaps significantly, the similarly Ferrari-powered STR has a slit there too, as opposed to a big tunnel.

RBR has the slit as well it's just recessed farther in so you can't see it. It's what the regulations allow.

Oh, the problem is not that there are burn marks. The problem is where they are. The location of the burn marks visible in these pictures indicates that a significant portion of the exhaust gases moves inward instead of straight back to the diffuser. If you look at RB you will notice that after felt 20 iterations of the Ramp they now manage to point the exhaust gases perfectly straight back.
To get there Suauber will still have some work to do.

Without large humps and additional downwash, I'm expecting burning at Hungary.

Sauber should consider the latest RB spec exhaust solution:



But, they may be wary about it and its drag impacts since they've already had stated problems (I think over the radio from Hulkenberg) about passing Caterhams even with DRS.

I was really hoping that Sauber had a magic bullet with their new design, but it seems to unfortunately been a dead end so far.
