Fresh options with nothing to loose and everything to gain. Of course he'll be setting fastest laps. Had he been running normal strategy he'd never lap faster than vettel.

I can't see the team would put 2nd place this year over 2014?
Lauda said after Singapore they will switch focus to 2014.

50% percent of the work force have been involved in developing the 2014 car since May this year.

Most people will recall McLaren allowed Lowe to join Mercedes early, the announcement was made in May of this year and he joined on June 3rd.
The relevance here is that I think Mercedes wanted his input on the 2014 car from the get go.

The major updates the W04 received where months ago. The biggest and most relevant to their upswing in performance was this:

Adjustable pickup points on the rear suspension. Allows greater freedom in set up, and also helps the team with tyre degradation management.
Since then we have seen very little in terms of upgrades. Rather we have seen the car evolve to tracks(high downforce version at Hungary, low downforce version in Monza), rather than any big steps as previously stated.

I think we can safely say Mercedes will now be looking at 2014 to continue the upward trend they have displayed this year.

Coming up tomorrow we have a real milestone at Brixworth. Twitterage will be plentiful (ish) if we're allowed to take our camera phone :)

Right, now known as Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains. They've also done some road car work (especially on the electric SLS recently featured on Top Gear). Hopefully it's safe to assume this is about the new V6.

Good post.
I think it is also worth mentioning that Ola Kallenius, who supervised Mercedes-Benz High performance division in F1 prior to taking the top job at AMG, is now head of sales and marketing at Mercedes.

May seem inauspicious to the man in the street, but he is a staunch F1 and AMG advocate. He was one of the guys who advocated the use of the AMG name in F1, so as to increase market awareness.
Double digit growth(AMG) under his auspices, and an engine department changed beyond the smoky days of Ilmor(The now well established MBHPP/E)

His work in restructuring and reshaping the engine dept is exemplary, but apart from this Mercedes have an engine and AMG man in one of the top jobs in Stuttgart.
And it seems also that Mercedes AMG and it's F1 operation have already collaborated on Projects....
Developed in partnership with the German car maker’s High Performance Engine offshoot based in Brixworth, England, the new engine is the most powerful four-cylinder ever placed in a Mercedes production model.
The M133 Turbo.

I think most of the teams will focus almost all their potential on 2014 after this race, and Mercedes will not be an excepction. As far as I know they have prepared some important updates for this race and the next ones, but they are already ready to be introduced in the car, so all the new investment and studies will be oriented to 2014´s car from now.

Perhaps they will introduce more updateds, but they will be pieces which must be introduced in the new car.

More engineering drain from Lotus, unfortunately: Jarrod Murphy, the team’s head of computational fluid dynamics who decided some months ago that he would accept an offer to go to Mercedes GP Petronas - http://joesaward.wordpress.com/2013/09/ ... -mercedes/

Just when I thought Mercedes already had enough people they prove me wrong
Now I feel bad for the driver stepping in to fill Kimi's seat at Lotus....
