I'm not expecting much from Heikki compared to Grosjean, but it would be nice to see him place in the points. He did relatively "ok" at least in his first season with Mclaren especially considering the team was geared toward Hamilton. Heikki is one of the those lost number 2 drivers who probably didn't get a completely "fair" shake.

He wasn't great at Renault, it was surprising to see him end up Mclaren, where he was comprehensively out done by Hamilton, then he didn't set the world on fire at Caterham either.

I thought the general consensus was that he did set the world on fire at Caterham in 2011 when he dominated Trulli and put the Caterham into Q2 several times at the expense of many midfield teams.

since trulli had problems with his steering input due to power steering insensibility, he struggled to perform the way he is used to. trulli usually had a good qualifying pace, yet with lotus/caterham he struggled. and if heikki did dominate trulli, might say more about trulli rather then kova. i remember petrov didn't do much under compared to kova. so what does that say about heikki? I think heikki's experience and possible technical/development skills add more value than his actual pace.

I don't think heikki really is up the level of kimi or hakkinen for example. i think you could compare him to bottas. Bottas did well imho, but he didn't outshine because he did not quite dominate maldonado for example.

so heikki @ lotus. could he possibly even go there 2014? :?:

+1

Kovalainen is a quality driver in my perspective. Absolutely the best and most intelligent choice by Lotus.

He was voted driver of the year in 2010 or 2011 by the team principles....!

No he wasn't. 2010 was Alonso, 2011 was Vettel.

I can't get the thought out of my head that Ferrari may have an option with Hulk in case Fred leaves for McLaren. Knowing that McLaren/Honda wants him, it wouldn't be dumb, and also keeps Ferrari in "control" in case they (McL) go after Hulk. I believe that he was their first choice to replace Massa until Kimi "became available".
I may be suseptable to conspiracies, but this goes well with Hulk saying no to Lotus (beside Ferrari effectively buying third place in the WCC).

Autosport reporting Magnussen confirmed:

Kevin Magnussen signs to race for McLaren in Formula 1 in 2014

Interestingly his statement appears to confirm Button too:
I have an enormous amount of respect for everyone at McLaren, and I want to say a massive 'thank you' to everyone, but most of all to Martin [Whitmarsh, team principal] and his senior colleagues, for giving me this chance.

"Equally, in Jenson, I have absolutely the ideal team-mate. He's extremely quick, obviously, but he's also very experienced and superbly capable from a technical perspective.
Who thinks the McLaren PR team are going to get their bonus this year? Not me.

Martin Whitmarsh must not have read the informed opinions on F1technical...
Jenson’s race-winning speed, intelligence and racecraft have long been a crucial advantage to McLaren, but it’s his skill as a development driver and his peerless technical feedback that will be equally valuable as we make the transition into a new and complex technical formula during the winter and new year.
