Ferrari 2014 Car Pre-launch Speculation

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

OmniCorse reports Dirk de Beer is working hard to evolve the Aerodynamics of the 2014 car and the car we see in Jerez will differ greatly from what is presented in Australia. It says Ferrari are in search of maximum efficiency, so much so that it can be said aero is taking a reduced role over previous years but it is still important, as much as reliability of course.

It says Ferrari have chosen air-water intercooling with the full knowledge that there will be more weight in the cooling due to this choice. But that the air-water will be more efficient than air-air which will allow them to have smaller Sidepod openings which in turn will help the cars aero and give less drag which will also help fuel consumption.

In 2014 turbo engine will not need as much air in 2013 with v8 engines

what? V6 will need much more air in 2014, that's why sidepods will be bigger than before
I think vioture is referring to aspiration rather than cooling.

I think vioture is referring to aspiration rather than cooling.

But will the aspiration inlet really smaller? Three facts point to the inlet being more or less the same size:
1) aspiration mass flow rate is related to power, not to engine size. So a 1.6 turbo needs more of less the same volume of uncomressed air than a 2.4 NA
2) looking at catheram crash test movie, the engine intake is as big as 2013
3) even if you look at turbo cars from the 80's, like the ferrari above, you can see that the sum of the two lateral inlets is not smaller than the inlet size we are use to - it is even bigger due to crude aero knowledge of the time.

So I do not think we will see smaller inlets, and I do not think we will see other-than-roll-hoop inlet location, even if I hoped in that (and started the discussion on that in the "turbocharger assisted aerodynamics"thread)

What you wrote is right, but 'engines in 2014 will have a single turbine, instead of the 80 turbo cars had twin turbo.

It seems to me that the roll bar must be similar to that of 2012, 'cause different forms of roll bars were banned after that of Mercedes and Force India caterham

However, it is only my opinion

They also had no ERS to cool....
Favourite driver: Lando Norris
Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Ok but how you think can cool ers with Engine air intake ?

After week of voting, the new Ferrari may be named F166 | via Antonio Granato.

Dont think the 2014 engines uses that much less air than the 2013 engines.

Some quick and simple calculations.

2013 engine : 18000 rpm and 2.4 liters. 2 revs to complete engine cycle. 18000/2 = 9000. 9000*2,4 = 21600 Liters/Minute.
This is with VE%=100 though im sure it was higher.

2014 engine : max effect at 10500 rpm and 1.6 liters. 10500/2 = 5250. I did a rough calculation of boost pressure earlier to be 2.25 bar absolute at 10500 rpm. So 1.6*2,25 = 3.6. 3.6*5250 =18900 L/M.
And thats at stoichiometric conditions. If the new engines run leaner they will need more air.

Thats 12.5% less air.

Yes that is illegal, you need 2 pylons. Not to mention ugly.

Againts all the predictions according to AMUS (even AMUS recognised that they were wrong in December) Ferrari will keep on board the front pull rod suspension: http://translate.google.ro/translate?sl ... 06153.html

Could be 2 very tiny pylons.
