"11:16 Hamilton leaps back to the top of the times on his 53rd lap of the test. First man into the 1m37s, putting him just a second shy of Vettel's fastest race lap at last year's Bahrain Grand Prix."

Good to see, if a bit meaningless.

My guess is that it's a reflection on the bulgy sidepods (they have two versions), zoom in a bit and follow the lines where the sidepod connects to the floor (and some other ones) ... some might say though, that those are the 100 horses that Mercedes has more, trying to make their way out :D

edit: ah, i see someone already answered your question

I'm pretty sure it's an optical illusion cause by the paint job and highlights or at least is being made to look more of a bulk than is really there. As you say other shots don't show it.

yes but i thought its a bulk from the groundplate upwards through the undercut of the sidepot. On the picture i quoted it looks like that but it is the reflection from the upper bulk.

Hope you understand ;-)

Instead of adding MORE black to the engine cover and throwing away the "fade" they did the exact opposite. It really ruins the livery. Not really technically related, I know but it bothers me.

That session topping (so far) 1m37.908s was at the start of a 17 lap run which is encouraging. Decent amount of fuel on board.

Look at the rake on that thing... Or is that a braking spot (still!).
Checking different pictures that rake actually appears genuine.

If they're able to run that much rake would Merc need to consider the McLaren style rear wishbones?

To me it's exactly opposite - I like the newer version more than the launch livery.

They wouldn't need to consider it if they are already running that much rake...

It does look rather impressive. Even in the stationary pit picture of the rear wheel and floor.

It's an interesting question. In terms of a requirement to run the bigger rake: no, one can run without the other. Rake is much more dependent on the team can seal the diffuser. Mercedes apperently found ways to do that without the aid of the exhausts.

That being said, one is a benefit to the other. The low pressure zone behind the mushroom suspension will aid the upwash, extracting the air better out of the diffuser. A higher rake enlarges effectively the diffuser, allowing more air to expand inside of it. One solution accelerates air, more air volume through the floor and diffuser, the other allows for a bigger expansion, including for the delta volume of air.

While not a mutual requirement, it's a mutual benefit: the 2 solutions work in tandem and I think more downforce will be produced then just the summation of both seperate solutions.
