Mercedes AMG F1 W05

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Also according to AMuS, Aldo Costa describes this FW as very aggressive and together with a tighter, optimized engine cover it should bring about a 2 tenths per lap upgrade.

But they are bringing a new front wing to Australia.
Chief designer Aldo Costa announced: "With the new wing we went an extreme way." On Thursday, the wing remained well hidden.

The now single endplate bends a lot more outwards, while then inner cascade 'strake' and the cascade support pillar are sharper bended outwards.

This is, compared to the previous incarnation, more agressive.

Also the gap between the second and third elements has been extended.

There is a lot more detail on the inside of the front wing, near the center - I imagine this will gain more benefit with their new nose, which will interfere less with the flow. It looks like it's barely attached in places - maybe scope for flexing?

Also, I imagine they'll gain more than 2 tenths from a revised engine cover and a drastically new front wing like this - usually those estimates are quite conservative. Also, bare in mind it may be measuring that in terms of points of downforce added - but the extra front downforce, should assist drivability, allowing the drivers to have a nice front end and reduce that understeer they had during testing. This somewhat proves they have a nice amount of rear downforce.

My apologies, I threw in my own interpretation there. His actual quote written in german translates to 'with this new FW we went an extreme way '

BExtended gap between 1st and 2nd element too, you can see the entire bottom edge of the 2nd element
