This is obviously an off topic comment. The WEC wants high efficiency technologies like turbodiesel to be run. This will only happen if the promoters of such technologies are not disadvantaged.

Diesel's might efficient but there's nothing "green" about them, their carcinogenic fine particle pollution is actually far more toxic (proven to cause cancer) than the gasses emitted by petrol engines.

How does LPG compare with diesel? I hear LPG is cleaner than petrol or diesel, but what about performance wise?

LPG is a good way to drive clean particularly in bi fuel applications where diesel is used to ignite the gas. The problem is the gas storage in the car which is heavy and space consuming and the infra structure or lack of it.

afaiu some research show that while the filters remove most particles they leave behind the ultra fine particles generated
with modern high pressure injection and those are the most dangerous because like asbestos they can get deeper into
the lungs

is this urban myth or scientific truth? perhaps you have a source which would make a fair comparison with other environmental risks of other fuels. I'm thinking of cancer generating toluene and other dangerous compounds in high powered petrol.

Diesel filters are very efficiency these days even with finer particles are high pressure systems
regulations are defined with how many particles emitted rather than weight, modern GDI has the same issue due to reduced time to mix and does not have a particle filter at all, so diesels might not be "green" but its definitely "greener"

A really nice article by Arstechnica, looking at F1, WEC and Indy Car - with comparisons, technical info and photos. It's nice to see a 'tech mag' have a look at racing and call out the 'pro's' - heavens knows F1 needs all the media help it can get right now.

Sorry mate but that simply isn't true, the particulate filters are only 95% effective.

I've just been looking through the results, and I believe I'm correct in saying that all three manufacturers were doing 13 lap stints the majority of the time. (it was difficult to follow this in the race because the cars quite quickly got out of sync due to various incidents).

Under these circumstances we can construct another chart showing how much kinetic energy each manufacturer had (on average) over those laps where the limit is the lower value of (fuel capacity/no. of laps + Hybrid allowance per lap) or (ACO fuel limit per lap + Hybrid allowance). It turns out that at 13 lap stints, all cars were limited by the ACO per lap limit, and none of the cars were limited by the fuel tank capacity.

So, due to the EoT Audi had a 0.2MJ per lap advantage over Porsche and Toyota, and no difference in stint length. Given that the cars were doing average lap times in the 205 second area, and assuming the car is accelerating (or at WOT) for 80% of that time (164 seconds), that is an average of 1.21 kJ/second, or 1.62 bhp advantage to Audi.

What is slightly surprising is that, according to the EoT tables, Porsche and Toyota, should have been capable of doing 14 lap stints without any fuel saving, or maybe 15 with a little bit of fuel saving..... and yet it appears they weren't.....

MJ/kg for LPG is slightly higher or the same as petrol ~45Mj/Kg, but it is lighter so less Mj/L, ~27 vs. ~35 Mj/L
