Perhaps. The image isn't perfectly clear, but is the green strip one of those high-grip strips designed to slow the car down? In that case it isn't exactly helping him.

Alonsos ideal lap time is almost 2 tenth quicker than his qualy time -so P3 was on the cards for him. Both Massa and Hamilton were unable to string the best sector times together as well but lost only a tenth .Obviously this is a demanding track.

Almost everyone talked about making up lost ground at the start ...who would bet against safety car deployment early on...

How can high grip slow the car down?

Due friction: grip gives traction, but too much grip will create so much friction that it will slow the car down. Hence why we see these "decorative" strips on circuits like Abu Dhabi or Paul Ricard: they are a safety measure to slow the car down when it goes off track.

In the post-quali interview with Niki Lauda on RTL, they talked about the supersoft tires performance window being 12-15 laps. But also that the soft tires didn't last much longer!

So it seems we are in for a 3-stopper, with the supersofts being pure gold.

How many did LH and NR use for qualifying, respectively? And did LH ruin a set on his pole lap?

It'll be a crazy race with so many pitstops and a high risk of safety cars.

I too reckon Mercedes will opt for a three stop strategy. Quite sensible taking into account the new rules on radio messages (I.e. no instructions to drivers on tyre management). What could upset that strategy is if some drivers manage their tyres well on two stop strategies (possibly Alonso).
I guess we will see tomorrow!

If you look at the sidepod it is very close to the line so rear left is definitely on track. Really close

A two stopper is the ideal strategy but it can only work if the pace is measured perfectly. You would be breaking up the race into three 20 lap stints, the advantage of running this strategy is that if you maintain pace you will essentially run in clean air the whole race, plus you would gain 30 seconds by saving a stop. The three stop can potentially be faster, but I don't know if it would work seeing as Marina Bay places such a premium on fuel saving, being such a thirsty track. Also you run the risk of being stuck behind traffic.

If someone banks on the safety car as it so often happens in this race, one could start the second stint on primes, and if they luck into a safety car during their stint they can duck into the pits and run on options for the rest of the race. Would probably work well for a car with decent pace that didn't qualify well like a McLaren or Force India.

i bet on a fernando podium tomorrow. Maybe 3rd and if one of the mercs run into problems even a second place could be possible. gonna be a typical nando if there is a chance he will snach it.

If Renault and Ferrari are both equally inferior to the Mercedes PU, and Ferrari was as fast as Red Bull today (let's face it, 0.053 across a 1:45 lap is nothing) - does that mean that Ferrari's chassis is as good as Red Bull's?

It's the first corner isn't it? So he was in that position because he braked a bit too late, not exactly gaining any advantage, and i think he still has the rear "on track" anyways

Another thing: Vettel was all grumpy because he felt he could have fought for pole ... just no. no.
Combination of personal best sectors would have put him on P5 ... he was actually closest to his "perfect" lap from all drivers in the top5 except for Rosberg
