They modified the physical flow meter too. They changed the fittings at the end of it. The method of measure and the calculation in the flow meter transmitter is enough to separate two different flow meters.
For example if you buy a flow meter today, you can set it to compensate for bubbles, surges, oscillations etc.. and it will give you an estimated flow rate in those conditions. Then you can also change other things in the calculation in addition to that. It is like a different flow meter.
