F1 "closed": for or against ?

I do not get it: if they are going to convert the halo into a canopy, what is the point of the halo in the first place? Surely they can design a canopy as structurally strong as the halo itself.

Why not just use the front half of a fighter canopy?

That would deflect incoming debris and add an additional roll hoop in front of the driver.
The driver would still get in and out of the car like they do today.

Yeah, with a small but very strong bar on top of it connecting to the roll hoop. That would still allow sufficient room to get out of the cockpit, yet provide protection against a loose tyre hitting the driver from above.

Why bother with a driver.
Put the operator on a computer consul in the pits make the cars all the same like the engine manufacturers want and you have achieved the goal.
F1 joins the PC weedy modern western culture.

i hate this idea.
F1 must be F1, they try to kill this sport with her ideas (this F... new V6 engine, canopy, design horrible, fuel/tires rules)
after that, they don't understand why F1 is in crisis... i'm not Enstein, but i have my idea of F1 problems...

I'm for the "idea" of closed cockpits, but not a halfassed implementation like this.

A closed cockpit wouldn't have saved Jules.
A halo probably wouldn't have stopped the spring that hit Massa in the head.

If F1 wants to go in this direction then they should use an aircraft style canopy or better an angled windscreen that can deflect incoming debris (and be an aero part of the car) that doesn't stop the driver from getting out of the car after a crash.

I agree with your first bit, though Henry Surtees would have been saved by a closed cockpit (I know he wasn't in F1 at the time but this stuff filters down).

I do, however think all the concepts so far have been hideous.

I am strongly pro-halo and don't understand the anti-safety arguments whatsoever. Thankfully, in this case, F1 often ignores its fans.
