McLaren MP4-31 Honda

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Here is a good one for people to ponder about. Since last season I have noticed a particular design trend that has been spreading among teams. It has to do with part of the sidepods. Don't have enough time right now but hopefully tomorrow I can create a full length post explaining my observation and how I think it affects the aerodynamics on the cars that this trait has been applied to.

Maybe last season somebody talked about it and its effect but I haven't personally seen it. I was wondering if McLaren would adopt it this year and it seems they have partially done so. I also want to wait for the other cars to be released to see how many other teams have a similar trait on their sidepods.

photos of course taken from different perspectives (someone needs to teach guys at McL how to take the proper pictures of the top view :) ), size matched to rear axle track length with tyres (551px).

Lol, Mclaren is known for being size zero, yet the Ferrari is even slimmer at the back.
Yes, I agree. Engine cover on Ferrari is slimmer at the front of body work, around side pods. Combined with better PU Ferrari should be faster than Mcl.

Coke Bottle Area is slightly more than a plain top down View of the Car.
As posted in a picture before the Sidepod Shape from a Top down view didn't really change from the MP4-30, but it has a huge undercut that goes well to the back of the Car.

Plus it has Rake, who needs a good engine when you can have Rake?

i will prefer to see them clocking decent mileage without any reliability issues for first 2 days. it may well be the case that in first test we will just see absolute focus on PU and in second test we see real new parts. launch spec looks another iteration to
what was already there near the end (except few bits). i hope PU is a beast and then mclaren can show some cool aero stuff over time.
