I think Merc knows pretty well how fast their package is. I would have thought they use the SS and US tyre just to gather some data. Rosberg said that there was no point in testing the US here, because it is already destroyed after S1. But some data should be better than none? Especially if the teams need to pick their tires for the races this season.

Oh well, maybe Merc has another secret tyre test planned later on.

@MaxSteel my assumption is the track surface is more abrasive at least for the ultrasoft here so we are not seeing the full potential of what it can do. Also the temps are probably a bit lower. I would think smoother tracks like Montreal (if memory serves me) and the low speed track like Monaco would be where one would see the most gains. Perhaps even Sochi.

I must say I am also impressed with Wehrlein and Manor and the work they are doing. In the 24s now!
Thak you for answering. Anyway, I actually don't think we need those tyres since Pirelli tried to make tyres less durable for "show" reasons ( :| ). Is it true or did I read nonsense?

I was getting the impression Ferrari is trying to hide their low fuel pace. Why would they use hard in the last stint?

No not nonsense. Pirelli were told to make the show exciting and moar pit stops etc etc and now we get eggshell tires that overheat easy and need to be nursed.

Using autosport live timings is a pain in the ass anyway, f1today offers them realtime at least as well as gives more info.

Because you'll have to in the race, most likely.

Well no, I think using first stint was soft, second medium, and that's fine - you don't have to use all three.

But makes sense to *try* all three. Encouraging pace from Ferrari though - let's hope engines are at similar 'turned-up-ed-ness'.

Are those start/finish line speeds? Top speed is more in the 330-340 range.

Seems that McLaren still have terrible straight line speed.
Hamilton was 1.6s slower than Alonso, meaning he wasn't pushing at all, but he still had a speedtrap of only 2kmh lower than Alonso's.

But he already used soft and med? And no one else uses hard in the last stint especially such a short stint?
