there is still debris coming off the wheel when it hits the Halo. I suppose its better than to have the whole wheel hitting the driver, but at 250kph, that piece of rim will penetrate the visor easily.
I think along with the halo, they should maybe consider windows (don't flame me for this guys). If they want it safer, put fighter jet style glass in, not the top of the halo (of course), but all the halo currently does is stop big pieces. Massa will still get his ass handed to him by that spring in 2009 even with the halo. The bullet proof glass is key to this thing actually making the most sense. If you want to stop debris from the sides/front, the do it properly by stopping the shrapnel as well.

You have no data to back up these claims. In Bianchis case, This device would not have to stop the car. It would only have to deflect it laterally so his head didnt take a direct blow. Now i didnt design the device so i dont know what it can withstand...but it would have only had to move the car a foot laterally on a very slick surface to potentially save bianchi. Based on the shallow angle of the structure relative to an object on the direction of travel, i have to believe it would have improved his chances.

Firstly I'm not disagreeing with you, but just want to make the point that Bianchi's accident scenario was 'solved' by the virtual safety car.
The halo is targetting a different scenario and accident.
So of course neither of you two will agree that the halo would have saved Bianchi.

Like i said i don't think it looks too bad but this is F1. One (that does not know how F1 works) would expect them to do it right (Full Canopy) or leave it be. But i guess this just falls in line with the latest Decisions and Proposals in F1. Just a flock of headless Chickens......

If they made it a full canopy they might as just make the switch to LMP type cars and be done with it because the formula will be destroyed anyway. I really hape that drivers like Hülkenberg and Hamilton manage to put a stop to this nonesense.

If we go back to 1996, the first year of the head rest protection, it's all about how to design it. New they put a few carbon bars on an existing design.
With the side impact structure you had the horrible looking Ferrari adoption, just like this halo and the beautiful sleek Williams, which most teams still use today.

I assume that most teams will make a pleasant looking device at the end. Not just some bolted on tubbing.

Hey guys, I posted this on the Autosport Forum and figured I should post it here as well.
I'm not sure if the concept has been tested or simply dismissed, but I've had a go at visualizing the 2011 Lola proposal, which, as you know, featured a safety hoop + a semi-canopy while keeping the idea of an open cockpit. It provided protection from the front as well as from the top.

The addition of a rigid safety hoop of carbon fibre over the driver’s helmet would stop wheels (or other large objects) from impacting on top of the driver’s head. This rigid structure could be combined with the outer shell of the current removable head padding. It would therefore not restrict driver access anymore than the current level of padding, which has to be removed before the driver can get in or out of the car. The outer edges of the hoop would spigot into the chassis to provide a continuous structural load path.

Personally I find this to be the most aesthetically pleasing proposal, so here are some pictures based on the 2015 Merc. (base 3D model provided by Isaint from grandprixgames.org, renderings are mine). It still looks like an F1 car to me.

I'm glad we are (seemingly) going ahead with the halo. Great for driver safety, and it doesn't look all that bad. I'm sure the final version will look slightly better/more sleek.
