As an observation, that sure looks like the car is running with a lot of rake in that video.

Williams worried about chasing pack in 2016 F1 season
By Lawrence Barretto @lawrobarretto Published on Tuesday March 15th 2016

Claire Williams says she is worried about the chasing pack despite her team's strong showing in Formula 1 pre-season testing.

Williams chief test engineer Rod Nelson has said he felt Williams can get ahead of Ferrari and be second to pacesetter Mercedes based on its form.

But while Williams is hopeful the team has closed the gap to Mercedes and Ferrari, she's very aware of the threat posed from the teams behind.

"I'd like to think we've closed the gap to Ferrari and Mercedes," deputy team principal Williams told Autosport.

"What I'm more worried about is the people behind us. The Red Bulls, Toro Rossos and Force Indias look quick and I'm worried about it.

"But for the fans, it would be amazing if there were some close fights. I think the pack is really constricted."

Williams is hopeful the team has made gains in the areas which held it back last year as it aims to continue to take the fight to Mercedes and Ferrari.

"I get a sense that we haven't done a bad job," said Williams.

"We've found some more downforce and the drivers are saying we've got some more grip in the medium and high speed corners.

"The car is quick on the straights, even quicker than it was before, which is great.

"The team has worked really hard over the winter and we've got some cool new bits on the car.

"We have upgrades scheduled with some small modifications for Australia and then some for Bahrain and then throughout the season.

"This year, it is going to be tough because we have 2017 regulations coming. It's going to be a real challenge."

If Manor and Williams have same model gearbox (i.e. 2016-flavor) then Williams did not get extreme with the gearbox undercut like McLaren, Toro Roso, etc. Doesn't the back of the 2016 Manor look a bit like a 2016 Williams that went back to the buffet too many times?

Force India uses a Merc engine, but don't they also use a Merc transmission? The FI rear-end looks very much the same as the Mercedes, almost a direct copy over the back half of the car until you get out to the diffuser and rear-wing details.

For midfield and backmarker customers, once their entire powertrain and suspension geometry are locked in by their factory supplier, it seems that the overall car layout and aero package end up being the same as well. Close to Indycar-type "aero-kits" for Formula 1.

Williams is keeping an in-house gearbox program, probably not worth the money on a yearly basis but good value in terms of long-term control and independence. It's easy to imagine a team's "must-buy" gearbox situation turning into something like the Red Bull engine-supply melodrama from last year. The Williams gearbox program means Claire Williams will never have to whine to the press about having a "right" to buy a competitive gearbox.

Williams update in Bahrain - Crash Test

The Williams-short nose has finally passed the crash test. Thus the way is free for the first use. However, only at the Bahrain GP. And there gets only one driver, the new nose, the wings and the associated baffles.

Williams breathe easy. The short nose has made the crash test. "It took us 10 to 12 Calls" smiles Technical Director Pat Symonds mischievously. Including its own factory in the course. The short nose is only 85 centimeters long. That is the minimum, which dictate the rules.

Not only the nose is new. Therefore a new front wing and the associated baffles come under the nose. An aero package that has it all. "It is one of the biggest steps for us in recent years," says Symonds.

Only a Williams driver gets new nose
Felipe Massa has already driven the new nose. Only in the simulator. "A real winner", radiates the Brazilians. The nose is not only more downforce on the front axle, it also improves the flow to the rear. There was still so far the weak point of the car.

Nose, wings and deflectors will debut only at the second Grand Prix in Bahrain. It is so far only one copy will be built. Who gets it? "The driver, who goes home with more points from the first Grand Prix in Australia," says Massa.

While there isn't as much space underneath the gearbox on the FW38 as there is on the STR11, it still has a large open floor area underneath - unlike the RB12 for example where the bodywork connects to the floor underneath the gearbox all the way to the end of the floor.

I have got the proper english news :)

Williams' much anticipated new nose for its 2016 car has finally passed the mandatory crash tests. Auto Motor und Sport reported from the Melbourne paddock that the ultra-short nose, right at the limit of the regulations at just 85cm, will make its bow in Bahrain in two weeks.

"It took us 10 to 12 tries" at the crash test, smiled technical boss Pat Symonds. Coming with the short nose is a new front wing and aerodynamic details underneath the car, which according to Symonds is "one of the biggest steps for us in recent years".

However, only one version of the package will be ready by Bahrain. Asked who will get it, Felipe Massa answered: "The driver who gets the most points in Australia." (GMM)

LookBackTime, do you know where I can find full size or much larger images of those profile shots?

Also the values quoted for the Mercedes W06 are incorrect. The car had a wheelbase of 3475mm, front overhang is 1000mm and rear overhang is 600mm, so the total length was approximately 5075mm. I would take the rest of the figures with a pince of salt.
