A couple of Clutch bite point finds followed by a practice start! It might be related to this new clutch that was rumoured Merc were looking at?

Didn't realise there were that many updates on the car. Probably a good thing they crashed out, could have been a bit soul destroying if we saw them just race off into the distance and win by some 30-40 seconds.

Even with his 17 KPH slow-down, Nico was streets ahead of the pack when he and Lewis collided...and he was under breaking as well.

I noticed that too. Already a good distance ahead and it had only been 3 corners!

I assumed that was because he burned through all his ERS in those 3 corners and that's why it started harvesting (as if the wrong mode he was in was an exceptionally aggressive ERS-usage mode).
No good turn goes unpunished.

I don't think it was an aggressive ERS mode? Lewis was on his tail the entire time. More likely a conservative ERS mode that was just overridden by the start. As soon as he was up to speed, it started conserving power.

It was harvesting whilst accelerating out of a corner, it wasn't even near the braking zone where you'd lift and coast to harvest - I'd say it must have been fairly aggressive beforehand to need that!

Nico remembered to activate start mode on his wheel, but failed to change the strat dial from a fuel conserving, ERS harvesting, slow speed setting to the normal race mode setting. The start mode overrode the strat setting, which is why he kept up with Lewis in the run to turn 1 and through turn 2/3. After a period of time (or possibly once a certain speed is reached but I'm fairly sure it's the latter), the start mode runs out and switches back to whatever the driver has selected, which in this case was the slow speed, fuel conserving, ERS harvesting mode, which reduced his acceleration and led to the incident.
