Let's put the half billion in perspective: how much does Ferrari get in payments from the FIA (it's more than any other team, I know that) and how much in sponsorship?

I think their net spend is significantly less.

Ferrari needs a budget of 800 million to compete

Redbull spends close to 500million only in the team and no engine works

Ferrari's failure is because they do not spend enough

Err.... this is what I could see....

The full breakdown is below - the figures in brackets show income from sponsors, then partners and then from TV/FOM...

F1 2015 team budgets:

1. Red Bull Racing (€266m + €35.7m + €167m) = €468.7m
2. Mercedes (€122m + €212.4m + €133m) = €467.4m
3. McLaren Honda (€144.5m + €216.5m + €104m) = €465m
4. Ferrari (€208.5m + €34.5m + €175m) = €418m
5. Williams (€52.5m + €22.9m + €111m) = €186.4m
6. Lotus (€69.5m + €13.6m + €56m) = €139.1m
7. Toro Rosso (€68m + €9.45m + €60m) = €137.45m
8. Force India (€49.5m + €12.2m + €68m) = €129.7m

These are racing team budget, and does not include the engine side of the things.

The figures of the top teams are so close that you could almost think there is an agreement.

In case of Ferrari and Mercedes it is including there engine spend

2014
In addition to the £133.9m cost of its engines, Mercedes spent a staggering £190.7m on running the F1 team. It is a 26.2% increase on the previous year and comes to the highest amount Mercedes has spent since it took over the team at the end of 2009.

Ross Brawn did always say that Mercedes is a pioneer in lean operations. Even in 2010 I think the budget was a little over £120 million. Not including driver salaries I think. Someone can probably do more research on it but I remember that Ross Brawn interview.

I'm sure merc isn't spending a billion on the PU year after year but no doubt the fact alone they had double the engineers on the challenge between 2012-14 means the rumors of a 1 billion investment are closer to true than not.

There is no way this was paid for by the racing team - and once the performance advantage was secure they could drastically reduce spending in comparison to other teams.

the billion spent will have more than paid off as well. Probably one of the most efficient billion spent in F1 history given the results.

Don't forget as well that Ferrari outsourced or "sold" its entire marketing to Philip Morris, that's maybe even the difference in spending between RBR/MGP/Mcl and Ferrari

They have a wonderful unique system, with partner Shell, that with a full fuel tank, they have around nine hundred to a thousand extra Newtons of mechanical downforce.
Even when stationary!

Ferrari going aggressive for the sake of appearing strong. I think it's a big mistake which they've been repeating ever since Australia.

There is a good chance that the Medium actually will be a good racing tyre. They at least need to try in FP2 and see how it works. Why in the world would you only select 1 set. #-o

And 7 sets of Super Softs. There is no need, since it's highly likely that it won't be a good, durable racing tyre. Much wiser to select a couple more sets of the Soft tyre. Maybe even try to do Q2 on the softs, if they can manage it.

Going aggressive all the time in my eyes seems quite desperate and lost, rather than in control.

Besides, since the team seem to struggle with setting up the car, they should go with more durable tyres in free practise to cover more milage and actually gain some understanding of the car. Mercedes did the exact same thing in pre-season testing.

It seems a bit ridiculous to criticise their tyre choice before the GP before we know anything about how the tyres will work at circuit. The trend this year has been that the hardest of the tyre options rarely gets any use.
