Mercedes AMG F1 W07

Maybe it's main benefit is under low ride heights as it would effectively allow flow to bleed into the tunnel
It's more of a general principle solution. The issue they are trying to solve here is the 'endplate' (the vertical fence) and arched footplate. Those pieces of bodywork are hindering flow from getting underneath the the horizontal pieces of the footplate. Underneath the wing, you have a negative pressure area which on interaction with the flow from outside creates a very powerful vortex, which aids in creating downforce from the wing. To get around the issue, Mercedes already installed slots on the horizontal section to bleed flow into the tunnel in the past. However, the new solution should be quite beneficial as it will raise the pressure gradient.

Lookbacktime's pictures actually accentuates a subtle, but important difference too: the pieces inbetween the slots are now flatter and more horizontal, opposed to the previous solution where they had they had a small negative AoA. The change attempts to raise pressure underneath the horizontal sections I believe, all in order to raise your pressure differential.

It's a very similar principe to a diffuser.

Same thing as the rear wing. Bleed off high pressure in a way to affect the vortex.

It should also allow the elements to flex back/down more on the straights.

At first , it appears they want to bleed out some of the high pressure air above the first two elements underneath to strengthen the outboard vortex. As these two elements are closest to the ground and the vortices are stronger and the loss due to induced drag from these two is perhaps minimal or not of importance.

Is there really that much high pressure on top of the front wing? I understood it to be more of a deflection device rather than a real high/low pressure differential thing.

Yes, atleast on the section which is neutral (due to ground effect) and all the sections till the endplate do contribute. I believe the front wing contributes 25 -35% of the downforce and the rest from the floor and rear wing.

No, that is not what I would call high pressure. However, the pressure below the wing is actually negative! What you have here is a big pressure differential due the wing running in ground effect. Very, very similar to a diffuser.

What can we learn about the flow of smoke and flames coming off Hamiltons car?

It got a very good kickup, even at lower speed. It suggests they have a good diffuser/rear wing flow connection.

Nico will be taking his final engine here as the previous has done Spa, Monza, Singapore and Sepang so there is no more life left to run in P3, Q and R. If they don't bring the upgrade here then it wont happen this season.

what was the root of the engine problem Hamilton had ?
