"One outside possibility if a deal cannot be done with Williams is Carlos Sainz.
The 22-year-old Spaniard is under contract to Red Bull next season to continue with their junior team Toro Rosso for a third season, but sources say the drinks company would release him if Mercedes came in for him." BBC (http://www.bbc.com/sport/formula1/38282791)

Having Alonso out of the equation the thing will be Bottas, Werhlein or Sainz.

Which logic?
The logic is easily on Weh. The rule change is not changing everything. That still means the others will need to find half a second on Merc to be competitive. So the easy choice is a driver that gives a good Nr2. So the logic is to take your reserve driver.

Everything else would be unlogical:
- Why back a driver in F1 who is not competitive?
- Why guide a driver in your junior program who is not competitive?
- Why have a reserve driver you do not put into your car when you need a reserve?

The only thing which might be a problem for Weh is that Merc more or less knows where they are with the car. So if they think it is still as dominant as last year, there is a big chance, that Niki insists on driving himself to P2 in the championship.

You know, your logic is the most illogical decision ever.
Where does your half a second come from? RedBull were breathing in Merc's necks, how's that for logic.
There have been various occasions where Nico was almost 5 tenths down on Lewis during Qually, or vise versa, or even got split. Meanwhile, Whilst Mercedes still reigns in Qually, the race is where the points are given and that's exactly where the competition got close.

Wehrlein has driven nothing but a backmarker trashcan with zero pressure, zero goal, and zero interest. He doesnt know squad from competition. And you're about to slam this guy in a championship capable car next to a giant right in between the wolves. lol, did you give this even a half second of thought?

Everything else would be unlogical:
- Why back a driver in F1 who is not competitive?
- Why guide a driver in your junior program who is not competitive?
Sebastien Buemi, Scott Speed, Jaime Alguersuari, Jean Eric Vergne.......
F1 drivers backed by RB untill they decided they weren't competitive enough and got replaced.
All along, they weren't competetive.
Also : Ferrari development drivers, Williams' Susie Wolff, Renault's Carmen Jorda, or Mclaren's Pedro De La Rosa.

thank you for giving it actual thought as of now.
- Why have a reserve driver you do not put into your car when you need a reserve?
again, Carmen Jorda, Susie Wolff, how about Lotus' Davide Valsecchi that got replaced with lame Kovalainen?

So apparently Paddy Lowe is off to Williams for 2017 .... I wonder if a Bottas trade is to facilitate this move perhaps?

Sainz is a good option. The main draw back is resbulls policy. They will never give an outside a ride in their redbull car. Never. So i dont think mercedes will suddenly accomodate sainz and stifle onenof their own young drivers.
Merc will leave redbull to manage their own talent pool and merc also like to beleive their drivers are as good as any other including redbull young drivers.

Now... what can happen.. maybe there is a trade.. but a three way... Honey Badger to mercedes... Sainz to Redbull to partner Mad Hatter Max. . 8)

Strongest pairing. Vettel left when dani was pressuring him. Now dani does the same when under pressure from max.
For Sure!!

I know you didn't write the article but why on Earth would Lowe go there? I can only think to replace Frank Williams entirely. Otherwise there's almost no position higher in an F1 team than the one he's in now.
Unless it's just some media beatup on Mercedes.

Suppousedly the 2 things that draw him are:
A small equity on the team, aka he won't be just a employee.
Be in charge of running the team.

Drawback can be Red Bull's policy, but you don't want to have a demotivated driver who doesn't get what he wants? No seat at Red Bull and he can't move to a different team as well? Surely they will let Sainz go to Merc, but Merc probably have to pay Red Bull a lot of $$$. I don't think Red Bull would be in trouble actually. Best case scenario is Sainz-Kvyat at the moment, but an alternative if a seat at Toro Rosso is open, will be putting Gasly in that empty seat. It's the most logical thing.

It all depends if Merc think if it's worth paying a lot of $$$ for Sainz. They will calculate this comparing with Wehrlein and others and think if it's worth paying for it.

Interesting. "Strongest team" would not suggest Wehrlein. I'm doubtful it suggests Bottas. I wouldn't know why Toto would be talking to Lewis about it, unless it's Alonso and there is known to be history there.

If it is, count me surprised.
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II

Strongest partnership means between him (lewis) and team right? Which means there's a chance there will be a no.1 and no.2 status within the team?

I also smell something similar is going on. Lewis needs to be briefed about his new team mate and that's exactly what Toto is doing and taking feedback.
Alonso is definitely a front runner and I am sure something is going on behind the scene.
When can we have an announcement on this replacement.

Could it be as simple as a clearing of the air over the Abu dhabi issue?
