Williams FW40 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

On some areas it looks very crude(barge boards for one) like the team doesn't wanna tip the others what they are working on.

The coanda effect sidepods that Ferrari and Red Bull use.
Hot air exits look very Mercedes like.
Airbox looks fatter, also like last years Merc.

I think that Force India is going to feature that as well. The PU determines a very large part of the sidepod/airbox architecture. The turbo in particular needs a high amount of air, hence why the enlarged airbox. Also, with rear wing now being lower and wider, the airbox might be less of an obstacle to the wing.

I think, as others have said, that we'll discover that this is basically a CGI of last year's car with some of the FW40 added on for show. I expect the car we see on track to look quite different in terms of the fine details.

I like the return to wider rear wings, but what is to be gained from the endplates getting closer together at the base? I like it, but what's the aero gain from it?

Disappointed that we're not getting rid of the ugly noses though.

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Finally a car launch. What a pleasant surprise this morning.

The renders are very basic. No details in the bargeboards, or within the floor. Fins and slots are missing.
Further details and many variations during the test drives are to be expected.

On first glance, some design choices are inspired by last years Mercedes, for instance, the airbox.

Regarding the nose, I seriously doubt they will change to a Mercedes style nose. However, maybe this render is just smoke and mirrors. Airflow is designed around this nose solution. A major change would have to be done early in testing.

Just from the visuals, I am a little bit disappointed. I would have hoped for an even more aggressive look for F1 2017. Especially after many renderd design studies and the latest "fake" McLaren video. Where are the forward slanted turning vanes? I thought they were required to have a forward angle?

Anyways, I am looking forward to testing!

Posts have to be on point about the car. Some ranting about the noses and a polemic about whether or not overtaking will be easier has no place here. Some posts removed.

This area is oversimplified for these renders. Expect slots and double layers on the bargeboards and something attached to the cockpit fin

Image

Large roll hoop inlet suggest new cooling arrangements. Delta rear wing suggests an aim for low drag

Image

Again only a simplified floor area shown and the retention of the Y rear wing mount

The front wing is definitely a skewed and lengthened version of last year. You can expect something different in that area either during testing or in Australia.
