McLaren MCL32 Honda

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The lower rear brake duct winglets have a much more aggressive transition from root to tip compared to last year. I can think of two possibilities, either they've found performance by lowering the root of the winglet or the root is in a similar position and the increased rake the car is running this year means the tip has to be raised to avoid clashing with the floor.
It also looks like the slot that was just in the tips last year is extended quite far outboard along the span.

Admin is here, and has just removed a lot of off-topic posts. These should be on the testing thread but as they had nothing to do with the actual hardware on the car, then they have been zapped.
Despite reminders to stay on the topic of the thread, a number of contributors are ignoring the requests.
Please put your comments on the correct threads or else they risk being removed.
Thank you

Sometimes when you look at these cars they don't look any special. But when you look back at the narrow cars, rear wings and tyres from 2016 they look absolutely hideous.

It seems they are trying to isolate upper aero from lower aero... why would they test with such a simple floor and diffuser? I would like to think they have "something "down there and both want to isolate its effect and hide it at least till last days of testing. Maybe just wishful thinking but if that's the case and we add a still "beta" engine, maybe they're not so doomed at all.

PS: that pic from behind looks gorgeous!

Can't wait for aero updates for next week! This diffuser and floor seems so basic.

Interesting they run with DRS in the wet.

Is that special? Charlie can forbid it if visibility is too bad, but hasn't to.

In my understanding, they are never allowed to run DRS in wet conditions during a race weekend. I might be wrong.

DRS usually gets cleared when teams are already contemplating slicks.

With that said the MCL32 may have more rear downforce with DRS open than the MP4-31 with it closed.

And there is the high rake amounts. Do you think they're already running them efficiently?

This picture shows the very strong vortex coming off the front side of the floor by the edge of the barge boards. Clockwise looking forward on the right side of the car.
