CVT in F1

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

They are more efficient than normal gearboxes that they use today!

Have you ever heard a CVT car drive by? I heard DC testing the Williams F1 CVT gearbox and it was bloody infuriating. The engine never changes speed because the gearbox handles all of that. The car just made this horrible monotone sound the whole way around the track. Nobody would be able to take the sound of 20 F1 cars that are make the same tone. You couldn't tell if they were speeding up or slowing down. It would be horrible.
I love to love Senna.

Thats a VERY good piont....watching DC test the CVT Williams was really...weird lol. It took a lot of getting used to...seeing the car accelerate but the engine just sounded constant lol.

Hey Guys,

There's a short video of a very young looking Coultard testing the CVT on youtube:

Pitty the FIA banned it; apparently it was a good second a lap quicker.

The Mitsubishi CVT can be "pre-set" to different gear ratios selected by the paddle shifters on the wheel. Even though it is technically a CVT, wouldn't it be legal if it had set ratios? Im sure that it would be GREAT for the drivers to change gear ratios mid corner...

Anyways................

Does this CVT rule apply only to the gearbox connecting the engine to the wheels? I'm thinking of the KERS that are going to be entering F1 in 2009 and every thing I've read about them imply that they will contain a CVT somewhere in the loop.

will these be illegal, does the rule not apply to them, or are the rules changing?

cheers,
Baz

Unfortunately, it's going to depend on who Max and Bernie want to win the 2009 championship as well as who does it first.

It just sounds horrible, see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3UpBKXMRto.

Speaking of acronyms, see David Couthard before the GHG shots.
