I find it odd that Hamilton was the only one to go quicker than last years pole time? In theory the cars should be considerably quicker than this. Might every one be running in conservative mode or the track is dirtier than usual. I find it strange anyway.
I'm not sure that we can use last year to learn anything.
Remember that we had that silly qualifying that meant nobody wanted to run towards the end.
In fact IIRC Ferrari refused to run late on in Q3.
Oh my God! It was such a great and UNFORGETTABLE qualifying format. Thanks for reminding. :)

Well looks like that it can only be a fight for second place.
yeah, will still be interesting seeing how BOT will get mobbed by the RB/FER/TR? pack.
I don't think Bottas will get mobbed by the RB or FER so easily. Looks like he is fighting only to be quick in one run. Once he will find that it ll be a front row lock as usual for Mercedes. AFAIK Bottas is not a crack as attacker but a very good defender, I am sure people (Ferrari, RBR) will start mourning after his driving style sooner than expected.

Even as a maasive Lewis fan, I was thinking the same. Nico was better than he was given credit for. Although 2015 and a reliable 44 car was a little one sided.

But I would say if Lewis retired and Nico stayed, Nico would be well up on Bottas right now also.
Without doubt Nico was much better than many give him credit for and would likely be a 3x WDC winner if were not for Lewis being his team mate. No, I don't think Nico would've given up after his 1st WDC if he had another beatable team mate.

I just wonder though if the previous F1 formula with feeble tyres didn't flatter him against Lewis? When the car was difficult to drive i.e. in the wet Lewis disappeared into the distance by some margin. It was very obvious in these circumstances Lewis had an extra something than Nico didn't. I sure we can all remember Nico's engineer coaching him in qualifying to get him close to Lewis' times before it was banned.

It may well be that in the 2017 version of F1 Lewis would've been able to put more distance between himself and Nico had Nico been driving? I remember Lewis hauling some dreadful McLaren cars much further up the grid than they had any right to be maybe this formula will allow him to show his true potential in the car.

Anyway, Melbourne is an odd circuit that can bunch up the teams and it isn't until a couple of races on permanent race tracks we know just what pace everyone has. It's unfair to hammer Bottas' pace based on what are still 2 test sessions, FP3 and quality sim is a better guide and then, obviously quali itself.

Amazingly I had forgotten about it. I went back to check the times and though 'Oh yeah I remember that stupid idea now'.

Ah yes, I forget, also they were also considerably quicker than last years FP1 - dirty track I guess. Didn't get up to watch it this morning. Were Ferrari just looking a bit off it?

Ferrari looked fine. Brundle said from track side that Mercedes just looked so good. He pretty much just said that Mercedes could come out of the corners and just launch themselves. However I do think Hamilton is making a difference. Now if it's still Bottas in a 'getting to know you' situation only time will tell. I am however worried that it's going to be another Mercedes cake walk.

Interesting points made on SKY.

Faster cornering means less braking. Less braking could and should mean less energy recovery as well as obviously less chances of overtaking under braking.

In a sense, It's a relieve to see Alonso in midpack with that Mclaren. I just hope we could see him moving forward throughout the season. Just a case of Alonso pushing the performance of that Mclaren to a different area I think. Does Stoffel have an issue today?

All good points, although I am pretty sure the teams would be 100% aware of this, and would have configured/designed the ERS systems in such a way to compensate for this. (well the PU manufacturers)

Not to disappoint you, but Alonso is ahead of who?
1. Palmer's renault broke down, otherwise he would have beeen ahead of Alonso. There is half a second between Hulk (in other Renault) and Alonso, so Palmer even if slower than Hulk, should theoritically be ahead of Alonso.
2. Massa's car broke down and Alonso was ahead of Massa on timings.
3. Magnussen's Haas had issues (Grosjean in other Haas is half a second ahead of Alonso).
4. Ocon and Stroll are rookies in the faster cars. Alonso is ahead of them both.
5. Sauber with 2016 Engine.

Another 2011 like season incoming? Hamilton instead of Vettel at the front, Bottas instead of webber in the pack behind.

Can we just be a bit optimistic? It's just the season opener, so let us wait and see how things pan out. At least we don't see two Mclarens dead last (at the moment).
