that may sound that it might work, but in reality, when you're not sliding over them, just rolling, you don't lose much if anything at all, so they don't punish the guy who went totally off the track, they sort of pretend they might, but that track is a bad example anyway, as a test track, you don't want each mistake on any corner punished by bits falling off, and at that the Paul Ricard is very good, but as a pure race track with strict track limits - not so muchispano6 wrote: ↑30 Jun 2018, 13:15
Why don't you read up about what those run off sections on Paul Ricard are made of. The consequence of going off track is that your tires will be damaged and will cause vibration for the rest of your race until you swap them out.
"The circuit is known for its distinctive coloured runoff areas. The surface of the ‘blue zone’ is a mixture of asphalt and tungsten and the ‘red zone’ has a more abrasive surface to maximise tyre grip and minimise braking distances. This approach meant the use of gravel traps was not needed."
and because the drivers lately have developed a habit of running someone off the road or out of the road and stewards do pretty much nothing about it, because when this happens on tracks like PR, the guy that was ran off, doesn't lose anything, but on Spielberg, this can cause problems for the guy that wasn't left room - a reason for stewards to take action
so those ultrasafe run off areas are doing noone any favors, they kind of work, but not really, and they let offenders get away with stuff because "nothing really happened", the yellow kerb on the other hand does exactly what it has to do
they say those ultra safe run offs promote racing, but in reality, if you go in there because you were fighting someone, and you slide off and destroy your tires, you lost anyway, because you can't really get back into THAT fight any more, and if you need to get back in pits for new tires, you're probably 10 places down and out of points, and with these mickey mouse tires, gigantic in size and weight cars and fuel for 300km, you can't really go on some extreme strategy and do 3x15 quali laps and get back into the fight, so as promoters of racing - those ultra safe run offs don't really work either
