What exactly is meant by this?Vanja #66 wrote: ↑07 Jul 2018, 21:20That.Just_a_fan wrote: ↑07 Jul 2018, 21:10Or did Mercedes run that extra Q2 run in order to heat cycle the tyres with a view to them being better for longer if a two stopper is required?
Doubt it, Hamilton lost the car and cut across the grass during that lap.Vanja #66 wrote: ↑07 Jul 2018, 21:20That.Just_a_fan wrote: ↑07 Jul 2018, 21:10Or did Mercedes run that extra Q2 run in order to heat cycle the tyres with a view to them being better for longer if a two stopper is required?
I will be delighted if i am wrong!
I did some analysis after FP2 sim laps here: viewtopic.php?p=777739#p777739Just_a_fan wrote: ↑07 Jul 2018, 21:10With the tyre usage, would one expect Mercedes are thinking a one stopper? Start on the Soft and then move to the Medium for the rest of the race. Ferrari can do the same, of course, but have the nice back up of a set of new, fast, Soft tyres if the Mediums start to get a bit ropey. Mercedes would be forced to go to used Softs which will, of course, give slightly less performance and laps available. Or did Mercedes run that extra Q2 run in order to heat cycle the tyres with a view to them being better for longer if a two stopper is required?
Didn't know that, thanks!
Improving tyre performance for the race by running them a single easy lap. Exactly how and why this helps, there are people that know it a lot better than me.
I remember him saying that the end of his run was compromised by traffic and that he could have gone quicker.atanatizante wrote: ↑07 Jul 2018, 22:17I did some analysis after FP2 sim laps here: https://www.f1technical.net/forum/viewt ... 39#p777739
and said that: "Vettel started a 16-lap stint on 9 laps old medium tyres with laps between 1.32.8 and 1.33.5 until 14th lap and the last 2 ones he was dropping with a 1.34.2 and 1.34.8 lap at the end … then switch to 6 laps old soft doing a 4 lap-run from 1.31.2 to 1.31.7"
Interesting comparison. Ferrari fastest in all of the high speed stuff, Mercedes faster in the medium/slow stuff. Mercedes running a bit more downforce perhaps or is the Ferrari PU now the best on the grid?
Looks to me more like Ferrari was running less down force, it also looks like their power unit isn't as powerful, more like they're getting more out of the ERS.Just_a_fan wrote: ↑07 Jul 2018, 22:30Interesting comparison. In fact it was Ferrari which hast lost the pole. Sebastian did a not so good first sector which costed him the pole. I am still surprised to see how competitive Ferrari has been. This was a Mercedes track so it has been worrying to see the Italians so close.Gr1ff wrote: ↑07 Jul 2018, 23:56Interestingly Hamilton mentioned that they were surprised by ferraris pace this weekend and probably made up around 3 tenths. I'm sure this 3 tenths he is talking about is not from thin air but the sim data the team has...
Ferrari have made a huge step this weekend which makes sense considering everyone thought Merc would be on top by up to half a second.
