That they entertain you is incidental. They are there for trophies and headlines.
It is not only the big spenders,it is all F1, indeed all sport They want to see their name in the winners list.
Without sponsorship and advertising, there is no f1 (as w know it), which is why I turn off my addblock when I watch stream.

The top driver is really the top team, and that does not include the car.

That's the opposite of what happened today. When you're coming in to pit, it says you have to stay on the right side of the bollard. AFAIK Hamilton did that, and then aborted his entry into the pits, and crossed onto the track. Is there a specific rule that would penalize this action ?

Entrance to the pit lane
a) The section of track leading to the pit lane shall be referred to as
the “pit entry”.
b) During competition, access to the pit lane is allowed only
through the pit entry.
c) Any driver intending to leave the track or to enter the pit lane
should make sure that it is safe to do so.
d) Except in cases of force majeure (accepted as such by the
Stewards), the crossing, in any direction, of the line separating
the pit entry and the track by a car entering the pit lane is prohibited.
