Split turbo is not a panacea for Renault or mclaren for that matter woes, Ferrari is doing just fine without it. What they need is a proper budget, engine makers test up to 70 different specifications so all engine builders will have a completely "new pu " next year

“Renault to have a new engine for 2019” What does a new engine mean in technical design terms? Do they mean an all new design, concept/architectural wise? Or an upgraded engine.

That sounded like they're using 2018 latest spec Turbo and MGU-K with an all new ICE. It sounds like their spec-C ICE is cracking under the power it's generating and needs strengthening if they want to push the power to it's limit. Naturally they'll improve the ICE for future upgrades as well.

Probably just the block of the ICE.

I don't think an upgraded engine, but a complete new PU. Maybe they will keep the "old" Turbo and MGU-K.

However it's become clear to Renault that the development potential of the engine is limited and they have therefore chosen to go down a new development path with a new power unit design, which Renault F1 managing director Cyril Abiteboul believes will enable greater gains.
“Given the ambition in terms of power improvement for next year, pretty much all of the engine will be new,” added Abiteboul. “Not only on ERS side, because there is little power and little performance to extract there, but the rest of the ICE will be new.

Seems to be lot of hot air from Renault lately they obviously rattled with Honda progress.it was laughable last year when they said the will not offer Rbr their pu for 2019 now in panic mode

A rear turbo looks just fine combined with the flow through the airbox and air-air intercooler above the turbocharger. Less restrained turbine sizing, less vibration problems with the shaft.

I guess the split was not a pinnacle afterall.

Yes, you're right the Ferrari is a good engine, and the rear end is a good package. It's still behind the Mercedes though, and even if the engines are similar in output, harvesting potential, etc, the standings don't lie, the benchmark engine is still a split turbo setup, and has been for the last 4 years.

:P ferrari beat it at Monza and Spa the power tracks. So split turbo is not the differentiator any more.

That said Renault is talking avout their combustion concept obviously. He said the ICE has the most to gain from so the architecture he refers to is the combustion chamber design and possible intake and exhaust design.
Remember Renault have a cramp assed intake design going on.

On sheer acceleration up to ~300 kmh ferrari had mercedes beat pretty much all season long.

What means Renault is very active, don´t give up, and keep changing his motor as much as necessary to close the gap

Maybe you would prefer if they don´t change anything and accept their poor position...

If not from the combustion process in cooperation with fuel developments where can real power gains can come from?.
