Red Bull RB15

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

And, allthough in this thread it is less likely, this was not due to driver error. It was a part that was just too fragile. He had not hit Any kerbs to hard.

Did he ran that whole rain race with a damaged Floor? It would seem so.

They have brought back the chimney (via @AlbertFabrega)

This chimney... They only run it in FP1 & 2 and have done for a few GP's now. Do we think it might be related to the Spec 2 vs the Spec 3 power unit? The Spec 2 is used on Fridays before they change it to the race engine.
Different cooling arrangement on the newer engine? Spec 2 requiring a bit more top end venting? It disappears as soon as the engine is changed. Every time.

I think you are allowed to change it for an exact replica for the race, but to be sure we should check the official FIA documente concerning parc ferme changes done in Hockenheim.
Edit: they didnt change it: https://www.fia.com/file/85254/download/28502
They did change some Trackrod stuff

Every time? Wasnt the first time we saw the open chimney 1 race ago?

Seems they are running a different enginecover with a ‘chimney’. Yesterday it seemed they were measuring airflow through their airbox. Maybe looking for ways to decrease its size?
Craig twittered about it.

Here you can see it from the front:

Looks like it's only opened towards the rearwing. Merc one was also open towards the top.

/edit
Look how the Y250 area is packed with an additional sensor grid.

Chimney back in Bahrain. Granted, it doesn't look like it is open in this view.

In Davidsons comparison you can see Merc is still the faster car, both on straight and in corners (they can get same lap time but have to use way less inside and outside curb for it). However Max drove it like he stole it today  , making the difference.

The car started smoking today after the finish. The Alfa Romeo guys (yes, not a mistake) started cooling it. So maybe the engine was run too hard?

Probably normal. These guys are always swarming the car with fans when they stop. The AR guys are just being courteous and helping out until the RB guys get there.

I know, but a car startimg to smoke is not normal right?

I didn’t actually see the smoke you are referring to but it seems every time an F1 car comes to a stop it’s smoking something or other, so I’d say it’s normal. Now if body panels start to bulge, paint start peeling or flames are present that wouldn’t be normal.

So the cool down lap wasn't enough, then?

Was he doing burnouts or driving the car hard during the cool down lap?

Regarding the chimney in testing. I remember red bull saying there was free performance to be had if they altered the engine layout a bit. Does anyone know if Honda did the alterations for spec 3. If not could the chimney be testing a cooling layout for spec 4?
