The space it takes up seems to require a bigger hole in the bulkhead. Ferrari and Red Bull Honda need six studs. The consequence: The transmission is therefore built a bit wider. This could be an aerodynamic disadvantage. Both teams therefore want to build new transmissions for 2021.
If the exhaust pipes can be tucked in where the studs should be then they make the overall package narrower in this area which might be what is meant.

So as far as I understand, Merc makes the 3 exhaust pipes of each bank merge behind the engine (that's why the bell-housing hole for the exhausts is huge) and they remove the middle mounting points and studs to facilitate that.
