But that seems to not match with the fact that for both of them S3 seemed strongest, doesn't it?

I don't get it. Forecasts show mild rain showers for mid-afternoon tomorrow and everyone is acting like it's a typhoon. We've had qualifying in worse conditions.

In my mind the accumulation of rain in certain parts of the track (esp. if drainage is poor) is the real issue given the heavy showers in the morning.

It is weird. His onboard looked good. Just a slight twitch in one of the turns, but then his time was God awful.

Hamilton will finish qualifying 2nd at worst. RBR will not come any closer than 3-4 tenths. And under normal circumstances Bottas shouldn't be a big of a match for him at race pace.

Sector 3 is front limited isn't it?

30mm of rain between 10Am and 6 Pm was what Sky team said.

Not sure where they got that. Most forecast I've seen predict roughly 3mm of rain (so heavy rain) around the time of FP3, but by quali, rain to be as light as 1mm/hour.

I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

I did some quick math, but i see less than 25mm (.99 in) for all of tomorrow.

I don't know why some of forumers derive data from onboard cameras and from driver corrections about car's speed. I am not sure which season was but time Hamilton was at mclaren ( maybe 2007 ) , Hamilton was talking about how ferrari were stable at turns, but Mclaren are faster than ferrari. More correction may be an indication of how driver confident about car's handling and able to go limits of it. Mercedes drives have made lesser correction maybe. But they also went outside of track when they tried to fast and Bottas show us what will happen when you go beyond.
If mercedes can not keep that speed during whole season, or they can not return tomorrow, I am going to assume they used all potential of car for first race.

That makes no sense. they are all slower than they where last week. its not like everyone except Merc, took a step forward performance wise. The only driver close to last weeks time is Perez, and he set his time much earlier than everyone else, and most likely running on absolute fumes.

Once the tracks get really hot it seems the tyres start to become the limiting factor and the times get closer together.

The rain will wash away whatever advantage they have it will be down to driver skill tomorrow if quali gets a go ahead.
