HANS device probably also save him from skull/brain injury as well?

You could probably list several safety developments that directly combined and saved him from several potential fatal injuries

8 of 9 lives used up today
A good time for ROmain to leave then, can only have 1 of those lives left now
If I were him I’d just retire and spend time with the family. I can’t imagine the experience of going through what he just did and walking away, and what sort of perspective it gives you.

Do you guys think that coolant is that flammable????
The rear of the car was intact without any fire. So the fire was mainly in the front.
I bet they could have some oil or even fuel inside...

Me and my wife were just talking about this. He may well end up with PTSD!

What did they put there now as barrier?

Concrete blocks?
Looks like it. Probably a better thing there, to be honest. The impact structures will prefer a nice solid structure to work against.
On Austrian TV Wurz was explaining that is not the case, neither his personal opinion "I prefer to crash into the metal barrier rather than the concrete wall", nor the current design envelope for the crash structures "against a barrier wirh sufficient absorbtion", nor would it be consistent with the majority of tracks where barriers with 'give' are more common (his opinion as a circuit designer and valuing consistent design goals / targets for the impact structures.

Yes, what you actually want is something that absorbs as much kinetic energy as possible. Generally that's something that deforms in one way or another, Concrete is pretty bad when it comes to deformation.

Makes you wonder why there aren't tire barriers everywhere. They would need to be tethered as well obviously to prevent them flying into the path of oncoming cars. The marshals standing behind the barriers too probably shouldn't be so close seeing the tethered front tire shoot through the barriers.

Also with regard to flammable fuels, makes one wonder if Formula E is less prone to such fires.

Yeah that overhead shot in real time before he’s over the barrier. Total eternity engulfed in flames. Nightmare stuff

Ok, fair enough. The blocks do move on impact, however, which is worth remembering.
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.
