Umm.. He was half a second off...
To be precise, 0.325.
The graphics were wrong then. It showed +0.490 when he crossed the line on his final lap.

Still, getting beaten by a McLaren is not a good showing.
Nonetheless, the closest he has been to his team mate.

No, it is always the haters who comes up with all the statements seen above! not anyone else
Could you lick it better than this? Move on. Bad result, under performance on a track where Mercedes used to dominate.
Lick it better? whats that?
They brought an unfit driver, who should have told them he isn't fully fit. Their fault. Stop the nonsense and accept it.
Please bring source to your claim Lewis is unfit??
Stop the nonsense
A guy who had consecutive poles before testing COVID positive, has qualified 3rd after getting rushed to this race. Take it. When was the last time he was 3rd in qualifying? Open your eyes kid. Superb lap there by Max. Well done Max.

So Norris beats his teammate 8-9 in Qualy in the end.

Bottas has actually asked for Toto Wolff to give him reassurance and feedback over the radio. He’s not in anyway mentally damaged though.

A McLaren within 3 tenths of the pole? Where did that come from? Last year, they were 1.7 seconds off the pole time.

Why that much?
The lap he did was a 1:43 that's midfield race pace with a full tank.
I timed it with a stop watch and it was a 1:42.777
His engineer audibly said 42.5 in the video. You are close.

Not exactly a massive blow though is it McLaren were around 0.25 seconds off pole an on the high heels of the mercs he’s doing better than recent races

Perez to RedBull needs to happen. Sigh. I thought Albon would at leat finish close to Max. Unless he passes Norris off the line tomorrow he wont be able to rear gun for Max. So another boring Mercedes mugging again.

Mercedes seem suspiciously off the pace (relatively, I know it was close) this year at Abu Dhabi.

Does the rule still apply that you can only test parts in the 'Young' Driver test that you've used during the race weekend? I have a feeling they're doing some experimentation with slower parts applicable to next year, probably suspension/DAS related and can't quite tune the car to the softer tyres.

Either way, well done Max, we might actually have an interesting race tomorrow!

You can’t expect Hamilton to have been 100% this weekend. He won’t have been able to have his proper preparation. Third really isn’t a bad result.

I’m pretty excited for the race now with the grid we’ve got, to be honest!

You’d think with the short run to T1 unless he has a shocker Max should stay ahead. Be nice for him to end the season with a win, although will it be another false dawn for Red Bull? Looks like they’ve basically caught up on development this year but how much more have Mercedes pushed on for 2021 since they stopped with this year’s car?

That is a theory worth looking into

Testing of new parts won't be allowed this time. So no, that does not apply.

Actually, it was probably better for Russell not to be here this week, or some would say 'look, the first time a Red bull in front, Russell failed'

Unfit? He seems fine to me. People expect Hamilton to easily outqualify Bottas when Bottas is a great qualifier. Where Hamilton really shines is the race. Bottas is on the dirty side, turn one is not far away, so a good start is crucial. If Bottas gets forced out wide in turn 1 it's going to be difficult. I'm expecting carnage on lap 1, it's inevitable, it's like racing in GTA.
