i agree. he should have bee hard and said, bottas was an idiot to be there after massively underperforming throughout the weekend and doing what he did to force a driver off track at around 200 mph with drs on, despite full awareness that he was coming behind. it would be foolish for a driver to not go for a straight forward overtake when it is there.

When a car is on track, though, there is nothing specific in the regulations that states cars cannot be driven in reverse gear.

In fact, the reason that it is mandatory for F1 cars to have a reverse gear is because it guarantees drivers have an ability to move themselves backwards if needed to recover from an incident.

The only requirement on a driver if he is reversing is for it be done in a safe manner.

Article 27.3 of the Sporting Regulations states: “Should a car leave the track the driver may re-join, however, this may only be done when it is safe to do so and without gaining any lasting advantage.”

Article 27.4 adds: “At no time may a car be driven unnecessarily slowly, erratically or in a manner which could be deemed potentially dangerous to other drivers or any other person.”

During the moments when Hamilton’s car was off track, F1 race director Michael Masi was observing the situation and listening in on the team radio.

And he was satisfied that the messages being sent to Hamilton, advising him of traffic and where he was in relation to the circuit, meant that his move was done safely.

“What it was, was reversing out of the gravel trap to the edge of the circuit,” he said. “Listening to Lewis's radio between him and his team, they were absolutely advising him all the way through where that was.


“So in that particular circumstance, I wouldn't consider reporting that to the stewards.”

Masi said such incidents are always judged based on the circumstances, so had Hamilton reversed on to the track in a dangerous manner then that would have been different.

“It's a case by case basis, that you need to review the complete set of circumstances that sit around it,” added Masi.

The irony in Rus/Bot crash is; had that not been a Mercedes, Rus may not have tried too hard to avoid hitting the other car, allowing him to better stay on the track and not lose control on the damp patch/grass.

Bot was naughty, and Rus probably overreacted since it was a Mercedes, and ended up hitting the damp patch/grass.

Disappointing. Sounds to me like Mr.Wolff has pulled his ears and he has succumbed. I can guarantee that if Wolff had tried this with Hamilton in 2007 he would have been asked to go and f***** swivel.

I'm very disappointed in George. I believe in my heart that he's as good as Max and Charles and just deprived at this point. If you allow people in this sport to manipulate you, you will soon lose yourself and with it the confidence and almost arrogance you need to succeed at this level.

it's simple, Inters and no drs on a damp track, vs slicks and DRS on a track with a dry line. Not to mention a driver who was afraid to takes risks because he thought he had a shot at a WDC.

When you have rules where you are required to keep a delta under virtual safety car, and get penalized for gaining a lasting advantage when violating track limits, a circumstance that allows a driver to freely make up a deficit such as unlapping yourself, a 78sec delta, because of track clean up as a reason, is inconsistent with the rules that aim to maintain a delta under vsc or prevent gaining a lasting advantage. Had the red flag not happened, Hamilton would never have been close to a podium (duh we all know that too) . And there's no sense in trying to say Merc had the faster car, Max never was challenged by Hamilton after lap one. Max drove fast enough to win the race, and the 21 sec delta would have been much larger had there been no red flag causing accident. Max, Red Bull and Honda were the class of the field no matter how you try and spin it! Max praised Honda for improving the starts and nailed it, Max also avoided costly mistakes, and the boys didn't screw up the pitstop either. Overall it was a satisfying outcome apart from Perez not doing his part and Ham's gaffe not amounting to much. Even Bottas served Ham better being at the "wrong" place at the right time. Or I guess he should be thanking Russell...

I guess you have to consider also at which point in the race did Hamilton cut his way through the field... He did when the track was mostly dry, while Bottas was stuck in the midfield DRS train while the track was still damp and therefore trickier to make a pass.

As has been the norm during the last few seasons, tire temperature plays a very big role in the current Formula, the trickier it becomes to get them into the right window, the more performance you lose... Hamilton lost a huge amount to Verstappen during the beginning of the race due to that fact.

In addition and specially during the first half of the race, completing an overtake, even with a big pace differential was exponentially harder... Norris had to ask the team to make Daniel let him through, having a hard time to get into his DRS, once he was allowed to get by, he pulled 5 seconds in a couple of laps.

How hard it was to pass was also proven by Perez, in arguably the fastest car of the weekend (or evenly match to the Mercedes), he also found it extremely hard to make any inroads and ended up finishing outside the points.

Yes, Bottas qualifying performance is what put him in that situation and that’s on him... But it would be interesting to understand how the different driving styles play a role in how quickly you can get (and maintain) the tires in the right operating window.

This is interesting as Hamilton did not technically leave the track since turn 7 track limits were not observed (according to the race directors notes). He was technically reversing on the track. This is one of my main gripes about the variable track limits rules. The FIA should not cite the track limit in some circumstances (like this one) and not in others (when drivers leave the 'track').
